Native New Yorker here. This has been going on for at least 40 years. It’s not really new. What’s new is that it’s expanding uptown and downtown and multiplies beyond Canal st. It is getting annoying for the neighbors who live in the area and many people are angry.

Illegal junk merchandise displacing pedestrian pathways. Actual beautifully built stores and businesses, shuttered. If this doesn't demonstrate a failed civilization, I don't know what will.

Altho i agree with the general sentiment, thats a bad example. That corner is Canal & Broadway. They been selling counterfeit items there for 50 years! The only difference those selling are Africans, Asians only manage and provide supply. It use to be 1000 Asian ladies selling.
