Some traders were left devastated and stranded at Teacher Mante on the Accra-Kumasi Highway in the early hours of today after a truck transporting their foodstuffs, mainly plantain, from Kumasi to Accra caught fire, destroying almost everything. Firefighters from the Suhum branch of the Ghana National Fire Service arrived at the scene around 4 a.m. and managed to douse the flames before the fire completely consumed the truck and its contents.

More than 100 shops have been destroyed in the Kantamanto market area due to a fire outbreak that occurred around 1:00 AM on Thursday. The Ghana National Fire Service reported that they dispatched 13 fire trucks across Accra to combat the early morning blaze, which was located near the Ghana Commercial Bank. I am deeply saddened by the destruction at Adum market in Kumasi after Friday's fire. My heart goes out to the affected traders. I visited the market and commended the Fire Service for their efforts, but access remains a major challenge. We must prioritise better planning in our markets. This tragedy underscores the urgent need for improved fire safety. I've directed the Chief of Staff to work with the Ashanti Regional Minister and NADMO to assess losses and provide immediate relief. A major concern is the use of gas cylinders and cooking in markets. These practices are extremely dangerous. Our traders and shop owners must be educated and committed to fire safety to prevent future tragedies.
