[...] And then that really changed.” A June Reuters poll found that just a third of Americans approve of the pace of data-center construction, and only 14% are comfortable with a data center being built nearby. In an interview with TIME, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman addressed the data-center backlash and suggested AI companies should respect it by building data centers in less populated areas moving forward. The lines are so long, until 4 a.m. People are bringing their children with signs that say, 'No data centers.'" "You know what it takes for ordinary citizens to show up and stay in line until 4 a.m. to speak against something? It's not a lot of subjects that will inspire that level of hatred." "So for all the data center builders out there, you've got to convince us more that this is actually going to do something for us. Because we're not buying it right now."
