Looking back on pre-2000 era masterpieces: Quake II by id Software, 1997. It stood out by refining Quake’s raw 3D into a more complete, modern shooter. After Romero’s departure in August 1996, the team shifted from dark fantasy to a focused sci-fi story of a lone marine striking the... show more

I still die on the hill that Halo Combat Evolved is essentially Quake II version 2.0 Also, both games own at least 3/4th of their then-current popularity to the MultiPlayer mode (which was, objectively, fucking awesome).

Strangely I never understood the Halo hype. What was it based on?

Great multiplayer, just like Quake. Also, the story had an unplanned resonance with American gamers, due to 9/11 and the wave of patriotism that followed. So, according to me, Halo CE was the right thing at the right time and the right place.

Did you know you can play it in browser with multiplayer? Just make sure you start server on desktop chrome with proper network connection.

I did not. Thank you! ❤️

If you have any old Windows games you wanna see in browser - let me know

Sadly gives me this, also in Chrome.

Where are you connecting from?

Europe if you mean location. Standard web browser/PC.

Unfortunately, the only bad part of this game IMO is the title. It isn't Quake proper, but hey - gotta sell copies somehow. But yes, banger game.

What I loved about Quake 2 was the fact that you could pop it in a CD player and rock out to some heavy as hell NIN.

GIBS need to return to gaming.

was a dream to enjoy this game after a 3-years stop in my case due to lack of a powerful PC

For me Quake 1 was mejor buta Quake 2 was amazing and very fun to play.

You forgot the stunnig Soundtrack

>giveall

Great Engine, was used good in SiN but man what Raven did with it and their Ghoul Engine with SoF was peak!

One of few GOATS of the 90s! Always a legend! Funfact that Quake II is named Quake just because they wanted better sales. The game itself has nothing to do with original Q1 in matter of plot etc. BTW - I dream of mored game in Q1 world - Ranger like Slayer has huge potential IMO

Doom 2 was fantastic on dial up

I couldn't finish it. It gave me motion sickness. Hexen was even worse.

This is still the BEST version of Quake.

I never liked Quake 2, it didn't have the Lovecraft vibes and the sound design sucked

One of my favorites. Mod packs for online

I never played the first two, but all of my friends were obsessed with Quake III back in the day. That, and Unreal Tournament.

Unreal Tournament takes the crown if you ask me. Unmatched even today.

'a more complete, modern shooter' Imo, Q2's singleplayer is, mechanically, an almost universal downgrade from its predecessor.

biggun DM was peak

Never could play it, I'm getting nauseous just looking at the vid 😭

Not did it only fealt like peak fps gaming, in my opinion it was.

Q2 had perfect deathmatch great maps perfect weapon balance still jump in when I can when there’s people playing

I can’t find quake wars anywhere 😞

Quake 2 super shotgun ❤️

Action Quake 2 was amazing

I thought Q2 sucked compared to Q1. The weapons didn't have the punch that the original did, and the atmosphere was blander.

Just re-beat it a few weeks ago. Great game!!

And it weirdly - the engine - cost both Daikatana and Duke Nukem Forever a much better release.

No this game sucks. The genre up to this point had been a gimmick and shouldn’t haven gone past doom.

The Chaos mod for Q2 was legendary.

The game I bought my 3DFX card for. Well worth it.

I couldn't estimate the number of hours I had in the Lithium mod for Q2. That red grappling hook lives rent free in my brain.

>"For a few months in late 1997 and early 1998, it really did feel like the peak of what an FPS could be." Wrong. Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II came out earlier and was better in every way, particularly in using a color palette that consisted of more than brown, gray, and orange.

I also like the unique alien designs that look like a fusion of humans and machines.

My favorite shooter for pure deathmatch gaming.
