Looking back on pre-2000 era masterpieces: Quake II by id Software, 1997. It stood out by refining Quake’s raw 3D into a more complete, modern shooter. After Romero’s departure in August 1996, the team shifted from dark fantasy to a focused sci-fi story of a lone marine striking the...

I still die on the hill that Halo Combat Evolved is essentially Quake II version 2.0 Also, both games own at least 3/4th of their then-current popularity to the MultiPlayer mode (which was, objectively, fucking awesome).

Strangely I never understood the Halo hype. What was it based on?

Great multiplayer, just like Quake. Also, the story had an unplanned resonance with American gamers, due to 9/11 and the wave of patriotism that followed. So, according to me, Halo CE was the right thing at the right time and the right place.

Did you know you can play it in browser with multiplayer? Just make sure you start server on desktop chrome with proper network connection.

Unfortunately, the only bad part of this game IMO is the title. It isn't Quake proper, but hey - gotta sell copies somehow. But yes, banger game.

What I loved about Quake 2 was the fact that you could pop it in a CD player and rock out to some heavy as hell NIN.

One of few GOATS of the 90s! Always a legend! Funfact that Quake II is named Quake just because they wanted better sales. The game itself has nothing to do with original Q1 in matter of plot etc. BTW - I dream of mored game in Q1 world - Ranger like Slayer has huge potential IMO

I never played the first two, but all of my friends were obsessed with Quake III back in the day. That, and Unreal Tournament.

Unreal Tournament takes the crown if you ask me. Unmatched even today.

'a more complete, modern shooter' Imo, Q2's singleplayer is, mechanically, an almost universal downgrade from its predecessor.

I thought Q2 sucked compared to Q1. The weapons didn't have the punch that the original did, and the atmosphere was blander.

>"For a few months in late 1997 and early 1998, it really did feel like the peak of what an FPS could be." Wrong. Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II came out earlier and was better in every way, particularly in using a color palette that consisted of more than brown, gray, and orange.

Steve Jobs on storytelling lessons he learned at Pixar. Says "no amount of tech will turn a bad story into a good story" and Pixar's early films (Toy Story, A Bug’s Life, Monsters Inc) had to prioritize a good story because animating so expensive: ◻️ "In a live action movie, the director goes out and shoots a lot of film — typically 10x to 100x more footage than will end up on the screen. Then they take it all into the editing room and that's why sometimes you see a movie and you go 'that stunk, didn't they know?' Well, the answer is 'yes' but they knew it too late in the editing room and...by the time they knew it, the actors were gone and the sets were down and they were out of money.” "In animation, it is so expensive that you can't afford to animate more than a few % more than it's going to end up on screen. You could never afford to animate 10x more. Walt Disney solved the problem decades ago and the way he solved it was to edit films before making them: you get your story team together and you do storyboards." "In Hollywood, one of the most popular sayings is 'story is King' but it turns out it really isn't. Because when push comes to shove...when a movie is in production and there's a lot of mouths to feed — and they're waiting for stuff to make and the story is not working — almost everybody says 'we will just have to make the movie'. And one of the things that I'm proudest of about Pixar is we have a story crisis on every movie...and we stop [everything to] fix the story." ▫️ *** D3 Conference in 2005:
