Russia is simultaneously attempting to approach the agglomeration from the north through the Lyman axis, where Ukraine’s 3rd Army Corps under Andriy Biletsky has been containing Russian pressure. Elsewhere, the frontline remains comparatively static: Ukraine has recovered some contested “gray zones” where Russian troop density is lower, while both sides continue limited infiltrations and localized actions without producing major operational changes. This makes the battle for Sloviansk-Kramatorsk much larger than a fight over another piece of territory. Capturing the remaining Ukrainian-held core of Donetsk Oblast would give Putin something he could present domestically as fulfillment of a central objective of his so-called “special military operation,” potentially strengthening Moscow’s position before negotiations. Ukraine therefore has every incentive not only to hold the agglomeration, but to make Russia pay the maximum possible price for attempting to take it. If Russian assault formations are severely depleted here without achieving an operational breakthrough, Moscow could eventually lose the offensive initiative it has held for years. At the same time, there are currently neither sufficient Ukrainian manpower and military-technical resources nor visible battlefield preparations for a major operational-level Ukrainian counteroffensive, making attrition and defense the more realistic immediate strategy.

The command of the Russian occupying forces has removed from his post the Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy for Coastal and Ground Forces, Lieutenant General Sukhrab Akhmedov, who was awarded the title of "Hero of Russia" in the summer of 2025. Akhmedov commanded a marine infantry grouping composed of two divisions, two brigades, and a regiment that operated against Ukrainian forces on the Dobropillia axis, within the defensive sector of the First Corps Azov of the National Guard of Ukraine. Earlier, the commander of Russia’s 51st Combined Arms Army, Lieutenant General Serhii Milchakov, another "Hero of Russia," was also relieved of his post. His units took part in attempts to breach Ukrainian defenses in the same area. Both were dismissed for a "lack of results." Large-scale infantry and mechanized assaults involving dozens of armored vehicles failed to deliver operational success and did not result in a breakthrough of Ukrainian positions. The only outcome achieved by the occupation commanders was significant losses in personnel and equipment. Since August of last year, when the First Corps Azov of the National Guard of Ukraine assumed its designated defensive sector on the Dobropillia axis, the enemy has lost nearly 23,000 troops killed and wounded. Losses in heavy armor alone amount to 100 tanks and 263 armored combat vehicles. The removal of two Russian generals from their posts is an acknowledgment of the failure of the enemy’s tactics on the Dobropillia axis. But this is not only their defeat — it is also our victory. It is the result of the actions of the Defense Forces of Ukraine engaged in this sector of the front, who have demonstrated their effectiveness through coordinated operations and professional command leadership that developed and implemented the defensive strategy. Akhmedov and Milchakov will be replaced by other generals. However, they should immediately understand one thing: the Dobropillia axis is a place where Russian soldiers and officers are constantly being killed — and where the careers of occupation army generals come to an end. Today is the 11th anniversary of the start of war in the Donbas. It was launched on April 12th 2014 in Sloviansk by a group of around 60 special forces and paramilitary men led by the Russian GRU agent Igor ”Strelkov” Girkin. They crossed the border from Russia on April 11th and took control of the government building in Sloviansk on April 12th. Strelkov had been present in Ukraine from the start of the war, having entered Crimea on February 26th and participated in the armed storming of the Supreme Council of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea on February 27th. In March 2014, his unit stormed a photogrammetric center in Simferopol, further consolidating control over strategic locations. Strelkov was instrumental in organizing local pro-Russian militias and coordinating with Russian regular forces, particularly the so-called "little green men" (Russian special forces without insignia). Strelkov was a former officer of Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), having served until at least 2012 and was an officer of Russia’s military intelligence (GRU). He was closely linked to Sergey Aksyonov, the Russian-installed prime minister of Crimea, serving as a security aide and advisor. After Crimea, Strelkov moved to eastern Ukraine, leading a group of 52–55 armed militants across the Russian-Ukrainian border on the night of April 11–12, 2014, to seize Sloviansk, a city in Ukraine’s Donetsk region. - On April 12, 2014, his group captured key administrative buildings, including the police station, Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) offices, and city administration, declaring Sloviansk part of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR). - Strelkov established himself as the military commander of Sloviansk, organizing defenses, setting up roadblocks, and overseeing operations that included ambushes, kidnappings, and executions. - He admitted to sparking the broader Donbas War, stating, “I’m the one who pulled the trigger of war. If our unit hadn’t crossed the border, everything would have fizzled out.” - His forces engaged Ukrainian troops, killed SBU officers, and took OSCE observers hostage. It was also in August that large formations of the Russian regular army invaded the Donbas region from Russia to stop the Ukrainian Army from crushing the pro-Russian separatist forces that had taken control of some cities in the region. Strelkov was sentenced to 4 years in prison last year for ”inciting extremism” Sloviansk is still in Ukrainian hands 11 years after Strelkov’s attack and 3 years after Russia’s full-scale invasion.

❗️🇺🇦🇷🇺 Ukraine’s military intelligence is warning that Russia could regain the ability to open a major northern front against Kyiv and Chernihiv regions by early 2027, but only if Moscow launches another large-scale mobilization and succeeds in building a new strike force. According to HUR Deputy Chief Vadym Skibitsky, Russia currently lacks both the troops and visible preparations required for such an operation. However, a new mobilization wave could allow Moscow to assemble a powerful offensive grouping by around February 2027.
