It’s Isabella (Bella) Javidan, the Communications Manager for the National Iranian American Council (NIAC), speaking at a protest here in the United States. NIAC is a policy advocacy organization. It has faced sustained criticism from opponents who argue it pushes positions aligned with Tehran’s interests, and in January 2020 several U.S. senators urged DOJ to review NIAC/NIAC Action for potential FARA concerns. NIAC has denied those accusations. Even the “VPN” line is telling. In Iran, major apps and platforms are routinely restricted, and people often need VPNs to access the open internet or even get messages through when connectivity is throttled. So when she moves from “I can’t reach my family” to claiming the “only logical reason” for the war is Israeli “expansionism” and invoking “Greater Israel,” you’re hearing a comms professional doing what her job is: advancing a message.

This is no longer a matter of political disagreement; it is a matter of national transparency and security. In a recent televised political roundtable broadcast on IRIB, the Islamic Republic’s own media platform, high-profile regime insiders, including Foad Izadi, a hardline figure aligned with Saeed Jalili, openly discussed NIAC and Trita Parsi as components of a failed Iranian lobbying project in the United States. Their admissions are direct and damning: "You went and set up NIAC over there, and it ruined the dignity and honor of Iran and Iranians... It all fell apart, and the JCPOA failed." "The Arabs lobby directly through people like Kushner. The Israelis have formal institutions like AIPAC. But Iran can’t do that, so they built NIAC instead." These are not accusations from dissidents or exiled critics; they are the regime’s own post-mortem analysis of its failed foreign influence operation. Their discussion explicitly names NIAC as a project initiated under Hassan Rouhani, with Trita Parsi as its figurehead, meant to operate through proxy narratives, deniability, and blurred affiliations. For years, Iranian activists, victims’ families, and civil society leaders have warned that organizations like NIAC do not represent the Iranian American community, but instead act as gatekeepers and deflectors on behalf of a violent, authoritarian regime.
