Waking up this morning to the news that Sam Neill passed away was a really shitty way to start the week. I can only complain so much- think of what his family & friends are going through. I can only speak as someone who literally admitted Neill. His presence improved every show & every film. He made life brighter. We lost the realest of the real today. RIP.

The Hunt for Red October is a film I’ve always loved but now takes on a new meaning in 2026 with the passing of Tim Curry & Sam Neill. They don’t cast films like this anymore. The entire ensemble here is loaded, including Sean Connery, Scott Glenn & Alec Baldwin. Every last actor brings his A Game. I usually rewatch this at some point during Autumn, and I already know this year it’s going to hit different.

It’s officially Spider-Man Week & I can’t help but look back on one of my favorite comic book characters ever. I love Peter Parker- I think he’s such a brilliant protagonist because he’s relatable as hell despite his super powers. I also always love & appreciate the role New York City plays in these stories. All of which is on display in Sam Raimi’s first Spider-Man back in 2002, which is still a genre-defining film. I’m ready to hang with Parker again on Thursday night.

Darren Aronofsky has really tested my patience the last few years. I don’t love how much he’s diving into AI-filmmaking & I wish he returned to films like Black Swan. I’m not positive if Black Swan is Darren’s best film but it’s the one that connected with me most, especially as a life-long violinist who loves Tchaikovsky's music. It’s unquestionably the height of Natalie Portman’s career as well. Wish Aronofsky returned to more films like this one.

Sam Mendes enjoyed his 61st birthday over the weekend & he’s not only an incredibly successful director, he’s a man who’s constantly pushing artistic boundaries. In the 26 years since Mendes’s film American Beauty won five Oscars- including Best Director & Best Picture- the film has turned into a divisive piece of work (for some reasons more obvious than others). But it doesn’t change the fact that American Beauty still holds up as an exceptional film that was worthy of the awards it won. Cheers to Sam Mendes & hoping he has many more films up his sleeve. 🎂
