Underwater exercises, such as freediving or swimming, challenge the lungs to adapt to prolonged periods of breath-holding and exertion, often leading to an increased ability to utilize oxygen efficiently. The main components of lung capacity include tidal volume (the amount of air inhaled or exhaled during normal breathing), inspiratory reserve volume (additional air that can be inhaled after a normal inhalation), expiratory reserve volume (extra air that can be exhaled after normal exhalation), and residual volume (air remaining in the lungs after maximal exhalation). Underwater exercises can enhance lung capacity by stimulating the diaphragm and intercostal muscles, increasing the efficiency of oxygen exchange, and improving the elasticity of lung tissue. As individuals train underwater, they often experience an adaptation known as the "mammalian dive reflex," which optimizes the body's ability to conserve oxygen, slow the heart rate, and prolong the time spent submerged, thus improving overall lung function.
