David Lynch on why Laura Dern & Nicholas Cage were the only choice to play the lead characters in "Wild at Heart" (1990): "Interviewer: Having seen Laura Dern as the naive and almost totally innocent Sandy in 'Blue Velvet' (1986), I was surprised by your casting of her as the very hot Lula in 'Wild at Heart' (1990). At the time that seemed like radical casting. Lynch: No. For me it was Laura all the way though. A lot of people found that inconceivable. They knew and respected her work, but they couldn’t see her playing Lula. But every character is made up of so many little subtleties, strange choices, odd little ways of saying a word. Lula is a hard character to get a handle on, and bubblegum has a lot to do with keeping her on track! I just pictured Laura as Lula, and Nicolas Cage as Sailor. They seemed to be perfect together. I took them to dinner early on, when they hadn’t even met each other, and there was a huge fire on Beverley Boulevard at the Cinematheque. That was weird, the fire on their first meeting." What do you hope the lasting impression will be for audiences? Lynch: I’m hoping that they enjoy the ride and I’m hoping that their intuition kicks in, this machinery we all have for sensing things we aren’t necessarily able to articulate. Abstractions can exist in cinema – and that is one of its greatest powers, for me. I love the abstract feel of it and I hope that others do as well. Interviewer: Where do you draw your ideas from? Do the 49ers need to make a change at general manager and move on from John Lynch? Lynch is not close to being in the same tier as some of the top GM’s in the NFL: Howie Roseman, Les Snead, Brett Veach amd John Schneider. The 49ers have missed on a lot of 1st round picks under his watch and they’ve had some horrible selections in the middle rounds, especially with crucial team building picks in the third round. Some of the free agency signings have not panned out and the contract extensions for some of the home grown players have been whiffs. I think it’s worth discussing. #49ers

The writing of the Becky/Lyra promo was great. A winner of a segment in terms of having the right motives for each character, and material that was good and well delivered. It didn’t feel like talent being handed shit and having to elevate it. Becky Lynch went meta in a way that actually acknowledged the situation that’s been causing fan frustration and deftly weaved it INTO kayfabe. She was able to be a piece of shit with internal justification and didn’t have to rely on hacky “you people” garbage at any point. Lyra was authoritative and made sure to not be small or get swallowed up. Huge fist pump for her refusing to surrender credit for her own success to Becky and telling her she was a better wrestler than her. Lynch knew right when to be the fussy and hammy heel, which is right before getting knocked on your ass by the babyface. Her delusional, dismissive, scorned mom shtick opposite Lyra who won’t allow Lynch to eat her alive works. Effective women’s segment where the creative armed the talent, rather than anchored them.

Q & A: Can an empire built entirely on supremacy and exceptionalism ever peacefully accept a community of shared interests? Isn't their entire survival dependent on maintaining that very friction in perpetual war? Afshin Rattansi: Like all empires, the United States one will die. But in Delhi, will the BRICS summit address the levels of violence that usually come from a dying empire? And we're seeing that violence as the United States flails about, desperately trying to: one moment bombing Mali is the threat, one moment it's bombing Iran or Oman, and Iran is the threat, let alone the attack on China, and perhaps Trump's pivot to Russia.
