🇿🇼 MABVUKU INTERCHANGE. (FLYOVER) I'VE DONE A LITTLE HOMEWORK! When I was home earlier this year, I drove past the Mabvuku Interchange construction site more than half a dozen times. It was a hive of activity, with construction work going on in earnest. Anyone familiar with that junction along the Harare–Mutare Highway will know what a nightmare it has been over the years, particularly during peak hours. It is therefore commendable that the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development Ministry of Transport - Zimbabwe is addressing this longstanding problem. However, having watched this video several times, including on rewind, I had a few questions about how the completed interchange would function. I have also noticed that quite a few people have been raising similar questions. So, before jumping to conclusions, I decided to do a little homework. 😅 First, let me take you on one of my usual culinary expeditions. I'm returning from Surrey Pies, SIX pies safely on board. I pass by my chyna's farm in Bromley to "book" a goat for a future braai, then head towards Harare. Along the way, I decide to make a detour to see Baba Gari in Mabvuku. As I approach the interchange on the A3, I notice that the dual carriageway appears to narrow to a single lane on the flyover. That immediately raises a concern about a possible bottleneck, particularly during peak hours. Then comes my next concern. How exactly do I turn right into Mabvuku? Will there be slip roads passing underneath the flyover, between those concrete support pillars, allowing motorists to connect to the roads leading into Mabvuku? And conversely, how would someone leaving Mabvuku join the highway towards Masasa or head back towards Bromley? WELL, HERE'S WHAT MY RESEARCH REVEALED. According to an explanation published on 29 August 2026, quoting Engineer Virginia Mawere, Deputy Director of Construction in the Ministry of Transport, the interchange has been designed to separate through-traffic from vehicles entering and leaving Mabvuku. The A3 Highway will pass OVER the junction, allowing vehicles travelling straight through to avoid the traffic movements below. Motorists entering or leaving Mabvuku will use slip lanes UNDERNEATH the elevated highway, with robots (traffic lights) regulating movement at the lower-level junction. The Ministry specifically explained how motorists approaching from Harare would use a slip lane beneath the flyover to connect to Donnybrook Road. I've also found an architectural impression of the completed interchange, published in Zimbabwe's National Development Strategy 2. The design gives a much clearer picture of what the engineers are trying to achieve. And according to a report dated 6 October, construction has now passed the 80% completion mark. HOWEVER, ONE QUESTION STILL BOTHERS ME. Looking at the construction footage, the carriageway on the elevated section appears to narrow from two lanes to one. Is that the final design, or are we simply looking at an incomplete section of the carriageway? If it is indeed a permanent reduction, could we end up shifting the traffic congestion from the old junction to the approaches to the flyover? Perhaps a civil engineer familiar with the project could clarify that particular aspect. As for my earlier concerns about accessing Mabvuku, the architectural impression and the Ministry's explanation have largely answered those questions. I'm glad I took the trouble to look into the design before rushing to conclusions. I believe we should take an interest in these projects, ask questions, seek clarification and understand what is being built. These are genuine questions, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with asking them. Now that I've established how the interchange is intended to work, I can concentrate on getting my six Surrey Pies safely to Baba Gari, while making sure that goat in Bromley doesn't disappear before my next braai! 😆😆 🇿🇼 #MabvukuFlyover
