The i-team in ABC News studied this private company's data center map and found that there are at least 4,302 data center projects across the U.S. Large and small. JB Pritzker has given over $1 billion in tax breaks to data centers, at one point making us the #2 state for data centers in the country (we're #4 now). All with no guardrails to protect local residents or regulate energy or water usage. So it's no surprise to see the room packed with opponents when a 3rd data center campus was being proposed in Hoffman Estates. Pritzker and Springfield failed to pause tax incentives for data centers and failed to put in place common sense regulations that ensure data centers pay all their energy costs, limit water usage, and contribute to a property tax relief fund for Illinoisans. Vote Independent in November and we will get it done.

John: There is a lot of opposition to building in America, broadly. That's just the nature of our society. I was thinking about, what do Americans want to build? Because it's easy to look at the data center stuff and be like, "Well, everyone's against building data centers." I was reflecting on the whole reindustrialization meme this weekend. And I was thinking about the actual knock-on effects of reindustrialization — most people don't want a car factory in their town. I actually think people don't really want change. They don't want things built. Data centers are probably at the bottom of the list. They're the least popular. But people don't want stuff built, generally. There are very few things that people are like, "Yeah, I'd be down for that to be built." People like the status quo. They're happy with things as they are. And they don't like change. People block home construction all the time. Also, permitting and expansion of existing homes. I'm not saying that they're as unpopular as data centers. Data centers are at the bottom. But new housing in communities is like razor's edge. I do think there's an element of like, Americans don't want to build anything.

1/ Maine just hit pause on giant AI data centers. Why hasn’t Ohio? The Maine House passed a bill to temporarily ban new large data centers — anything 20 megawatts or bigger — until November 2027. That’s enough power for over 15,000 homes each. They want time to study the impact on the electricity grid, water usage, and the environment. 2/ Electricity bills have already increased significantly in recent years. Local towns have pushed back against these projects. Maine is saying: we need to understand the consequences before allowing more development. They’ve acknowledged there’s not enough information yet on the long-term impact of these massive facilities. 3/ When the data is incomplete, the smart move is to pause and evaluate. Ohio’s legislature has the same ability — and has already acknowledged gaps in understanding the long-term impacts. A temporary pause would let us do the proper analysis before more expansion. 4/ This comes down to priorities: Protecting residents, keeping energy costs in check, and safeguarding natural resources… …versus accelerating large-scale development without full transparency. 5/ Should Ohio follow Maine’s lead and pause large data centers too?
