The concept is brilliant. It could be tied to a “5% for completion” assignment, so it simultaneously doesn’t feel like wasted effort & doesn’t overly reward minimal effort.

I think they are incredibly fortunate in their teacher. This is fine idea, so long as they understand the test itself is a learning exercise. They are learning how to compose their thoughts & knowledge within the confines of a test. GO FOR IT!

We are required now to grade observation, conversation, and final product. In that model, including their ability to debate/prepare for debate/work with their peers etc could be included in the test grade as a counter balance to the test grade itself 🤷♀️🙌

reminds me The Art of the Possible....give them all an A before they start the year...and work with them to show how they will achieve it. It unleashes the learning mindset.

You're right. They'll give up if they think they can't succeed. Sounds like an excellent plan. From managing, I've learned most people can't handle criticism. Frame it as coaching instead of criticism helps. They need to know you just want them to succeed.

What school are you in I'll drive miles to have my kids in your class. This is what my daughter fears that 1st test and not doing well knowing all well teacher pegs her at that 1st test level going forward 1st test is terrifying for them well my kid anyways A+ by end of year

Genius. Fantastic. My career educator mom would be so proud of you!

Correct. Introducing the concept of "critical thinking " great idea teach!

Great idea! Give them feedback on how they are responding to the test with a chance to improve based on feedback. Also, to share thier answers and feedback with peers to see a varriety of responses and feedback. This way they criticslly think about how to respond. Great teacher!
