The latest attacks killed Defence Minister Sadio Camara and hit targets in the capital Bamako, leaving the leadership shaken. Kidal is now in the hands of an unusual alliance: the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), a Tuareg separatist group seeking independence, and JNIM, an al-Qaeda-linked jihadist group. These groups don’t usually work together, which makes this a big shift, and a much bigger problem for the government.
