Mali’s military rulers, who took power in a 2021 coup, brought in Russia after cutting ties with France, but the situation has kept getting worse. The latest attacks killed Defence Minister Sadio Camara and hit targets in the capital Bamako, leaving the leadership shaken. Kidal is now in the hands of an unusual alliance: the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), a Tuareg separatist group seeking independence, and JNIM, an al-Qaeda-linked jihadist group. These groups don’t usually work together, which makes this a big shift, and a much bigger problem for the government.
