Over the years the character of Durga Puja has been changed. With corporate sponsorships and 'theme puja', the real Durga Puja has been pushed into a corner. I am all for creativity and themes etc, but sadly this has changed how Puja is performed. Earlier the Puja pandals would open on Shashthi with Akal Bodhan. Then they started opening on pratipada, now they open during Pitru Paksha. All for more eyeballs, more footfalls, more visibility for the sponsors.

The underlying aim is to de-Hinduise Durga Puja, one of the biggest festivals of Hindus. And ‘seculars’ are complicit in this.

Seems so, but the common people are okay with this. Many seem to be happy that they get more puja days for pandal hopping. There is no resistance from Kolkata vasis on this change. I am not sure whether rest of Bengal is going the same way.
