Reporter: “When you say close contact …could you perhaps specify what you mean by that exactly……what does close contact mean? Does that mean people who have been in physical contact ….within the same room….and just a little bit of detail on how therefore it would spread…. because how here is quite important to understand…” We need more than epidemiological terms that fail to enlighten us on the basic science of “how” a pathogen spreads from one person to another. (Note that unless scuba diving, shared air is common to everyone in close contact🤔) As the reporter says it’s a simple but important question essential to communicate what is understood!! A question that if it cannot be answered with any certainty, at least requires some discussion of the science and potential likely mechanisms. Vague and unhelpful epidemiological terms like “close contact” are not enough to formulate the most effective mitigation strategies we need for any deadly pathogen. Advising “close contact” is even more useless in deciding on what sort of “transmission based precautions” are required in healthcare….contact, droplet, airborne…?? If uncertainty persists explain what we do know about the science, or get someone in WHO that can explain it, and at least also emphasise the place of the precautionary principle in guidance if any doubt. The sense of touch is the most criminally under-explored modality in robotics. Imagine doing sleight of hand wearing thick oven mitts. That's exactly how a robot feels today if it were alive. A magnetic piece snapping into place, a paper cup peeling out of a stack, a USB negotiating its way into the port - all invisible to the camera. Learning how to feel must be a full-stack co-designed effort. We are open-sourcing a principled methodology called "T-Rex": 1. Tactile as first-class citizen of the model. Our mixture-of-transformer runs two clocks asynchronously: a slow visuomotor expert plans the motion, and a fast tactile expert refines it in real time with high-frequency corrections at 4 "touch ticks" per vision tick. Forces change faster than frames arrive, so the architecture had to as well. 2. Open data. The largest tactile dataset ever released to our knowledge: a 50-hour (~5,500 episodes) high-quality, carefully synchronized robot play corpus, collected on SOTA tactile hand hardware with 22 degrees of freedom. Available today on HuggingFace! 3. Training recipe: T-Rex extends our prior work, EgoScale. Human egocentric videos for pretraining, a diverse dose of tactile robot play for mid-training. I was really impressed by the UMI gripper (Cheng Chi et al.), but a key limitation is that **force-related data wasn’t captured**: humans feel haptic feedback through the mechanical springs, but the robot couldn’t leverage that info, limiting the data’s value for fine-grained manipulation tasks. Led by my amazing students Yolanda Zhu and Binghao Huang, we designed a **portable visuo-tactile gripper** by integrating our dense, flexible tactile arrays with the UMI gripper to enable large-scale in-the-wild data collection. 🔗 We demonstrate **cross-modal representation learning** and **downstream policy learning** on tasks requiring in-hand state estimation (e.g., test tube reorientation) and fine-grained force sensing (e.g., pipette fluid transfer). 🚨💉Technically, this is Novavax distribution news. Novavax had a panel at the Cantor Global Healthcare Conference this morning, and they gave us an explanation (in their own words, noting that they can’t speak for Sanofi) for why distribution has been so lackluster this year. Essentially, the bulk of the contracting happens prior to May, and Nuvaxovid had not yet received BLA approval or their 6 month shelf life extension at that time, therefore Sanofi was either unable or unwilling to do proper contracting. I don’t like that one bit, but it’s an explanation. That said, it’s just as unacceptable to me and goes back to exactly what I said in my original tweet. Sanofi absolutely doesn’t “get it” if they feel that they can phone it in as a “learning year” right now. They’re not showing signs of being very appreciative of the base that we’ve given them here, which should’ve been a very easy thing to take advantage of if they weren’t so risk averse. And they completely lack understanding of the market they’re in if they fail to understand that Nuvaxovid both has a large “fanbase” and is the most maligned vaccine in recent history, therefore any significant delay will continue to cost them a large portion of market share. While enlightening, and a little upsetting, it doesn’t fundamentally change anything with what we need to do here. Obviously the contact and education campaign needs to continue. Contact both Sanofi and Novavax to explain what Nuvaxovid access means to you and express your desire for a proper distribution immediately. And then contact your pharmacies to encourage them to stock Nuvaxovid when it becomes available for order. As always, be polite when calling and never be rude. NEW ROBOT BENCHMARK: If your robot can do Origami, it can do anything! Called The Robotic Origami Challenge, it is a dexterous-manipulation competition and benchmark held at IROS 2026, organized by 13 co-organizers with the Nippon Origami Association as judge and task curator -> pretty cool to have them on board imho. The evaluation consists of single task: a traditional Japanese paper airplane, in exactly six folds, from a 15×15 cm sheet of ≥60 gsm paper, on a competition-supplied standardized rig (bimanual arms + Sharpa Hands), both remotely and on-site. Teams bring policies, not hardware. An "Origami Grand Master" declares pass/fail on crease accuracy, structural fidelity, symmetry and paper integrity. Among passes, faster folds rank higher, with a 10-minute-per-attempt ceiling and flight explicitly irrelevant to the score. -> I find it interesting how they chose to evaluate the task. Quality is a binary pass or fail, therefore speed becomes the only thing graded here. Speed is currently the bottleneck in dexterous manipulation though, so this choice makes sense. I wonder whether there could be finer ways to grade the qaulity of such a creative task though. When it comes to data, registered teams get 500+ teleoperation episodes (six camera streams, 65-D joint state/action, 10-fingertip 6-axis tactile), an NVIDIA Isaac Sim environment with thin-shell paper physics (plastic creasing + fold memory), digital twins of every partner hand, and a remote eval lab (upload a policy, queue an eval, get scored). Still, I think it is a great dexterity benchmark the field badly needs, it supplies the hardware, an outside human judges, and the pass criterion is externally defined -> all three degrees of freedom are checked! Neutral measurement layer, here we go! The task is engineered to be un-gameable and to isolate pure dexterity. A known figure, exactly six folds, judged on creases, with flight explicitly declared irrelevant (the latter makes sense to me). Therefore, this underlines the goal to focus on dexterity, not task-selection or other strategies. I really like origami as an ideal controlled dexterity task: deterministic goal, deformable medium, sequential, bimanual, precision-bound. I am just not quite satisfied again by the binary pass or fail, I think quality of execution could be finely graded! But again, I understand this is not the goal yet. Also interesting to see the Sharpa Hands as de facto standard for everyone. Total land-grab that anoints Sharpa as the reference dexterous hand, also featured in Google's Gemini Robotics 2. By providing the hardware, the benchmark measures software while quietly making "good on Sharpa" the definition of good, and Sharpa gets real world data and feedback as a bonus. That's smart, the data flywheel starts spinning. The provided dataset is the richest tactile-manipulation corpus I have seen yet: 10-fingertip 6-axis tactile, plus plastic creasing and fold memory. 500+ teleop episodes with six camera streams, 65-D joint state/action, and ten fingertip 6-axis tactile sensors. The force/tactile channel are parts of the the benchmark's data, this is the first time I see this. After Days of Wandering, the Blind Dog Finally Found a Lap to Rest Its Head Against 🐶❤️‍🩹 A man was walking along the road when he came across an abandoned stray dog. The dog had once had an owner, but had later been abandoned and left to wander on its own. What caught the man’s attention most was that the dog could not see. Moved by its circumstances, he decided to take it home. As soon as the dog was lifted into his arms, it did something that immediately drew attention. Instead of trying to escape from the arms of a complete stranger, it pressed its body against the man, rested its head against his chest and remained still. A dog that had spent time wandering alone was able to accept physical contact from someone it had never met before. Why could a dog that would normally need to remain alert to its surroundings show such trust so quickly? The answer may begin with the way a visually impaired dog receives information about the world around it. When vision is unavailable, dogs can still rely on their sense of smell, hearing and touch to understand their surroundings. These senses do not simply replace vision, but can become more important sources of information for navigation, recognising people and interacting with other animals. For this dog, the man could not be recognised through an image, but through a combination of different signals. His scent could indicate his presence, sounds could reveal where he was and how he was moving, while direct physical contact could provide further information about distance and bodily movement. When held in the man’s arms, the dog could also feel his body temperature, breathing and subtle movements. Its decision to rest against his chest therefore does not necessarily need to be understood simply as an attempt to seek protection. Physical contact also gave the dog an opportunity to gather more information about the person beside it while vision was unavailable. However, a single encounter is not enough to create familiarity. For a dog that has spent time wandering, what matters more is the stability of the experiences that follow. While living on the streets, the dog’s surroundings may have changed constantly. The scents, sounds, places and people it encountered would not always have been the same. Once brought into a home, those signals could begin to become more stable. Food and water might appear at familiar times, the scent of its carer would return each day, and the sounds within the house could gradually become familiar parts of its environment. For a dog that cannot see, this stability can be particularly important. It can learn to remember a space through scents, sounds, the sensation beneath its paws and the positions of objects it regularly encounters. Through repeated experiences, a place that was initially unfamiliar can gradually become an environment in which the dog knows how to find its way. Something similar happens as the dog becomes familiar with people. Someone who is initially recognised through scent, voice and physical contact can gradually become a familiar presence when those signals occur consistently in situations that do not cause distress. This is an important part of the process of adaptation. The dog does not need to immediately understand who the person in front of it is or what the new environment will be like. Through repeated experiences, it can gradually learn what tends to happen, which sounds are familiar, which scents are associated with its carer and which areas of the house it can move around with confidence. This ability to adapt can also be seen when the dog interacts with other dogs. Canine communication does not depend solely on eye contact. Scent, sound, distance and physical contact all contribute to social interaction. Therefore, even without vision, a dog can still recognise the presence of another individual and adjust its behaviour according to signals that it can hear, smell or feel. A dog approaching from nearby may be detected through its footsteps or scent before physical contact occurs. If the approach is slow and does not create a sudden reaction, the visually impaired dog has more time to recognise the individual coming towards it. Gentle touches and a consistent distance can also provide additional information that helps the dog adjust its response during the encounter. This shows that losing vision does not mean losing the ability to interact with the social environment. The dog can still recognise the individuals around it, although it may rely more heavily on other sources of information and on experience gained from previous encounters. If we want to help a visually impaired dog adapt to a new life, one of the most important things is to provide an environment that is stable and predictable. First, it is helpful to avoid frequently changing the position of important objects around the home. Food and water bowls, resting areas and places the dog regularly visits should remain in familiar positions whenever possible. When the layout changes very little, the dog can rely on memory alongside its remaining senses to develop its own way of finding its way around. Unexpected obstacles should also be minimised, particularly along routes the dog uses regularly. If furniture needs to be moved or a new object is introduced into its living space, giving the dog time to become familiar with the new arrangement can help reduce the risk of collisions. The way people approach the dog is also important. A dog that cannot see may not know that someone is approaching unless there is a familiar sound or other signal. Calling its name or making a gentle sound before touching it can therefore help the dog realise that someone is nearby rather than being startled by unexpected contact. When taking the dog outdoors, safety requires even greater attention. It cannot use vision to detect changes in its surroundings in the same way as a sighted dog, so it needs appropriate supervision and areas that suit its ability to navigate. At the same time, helping does not mean doing everything for the dog. Once it becomes familiar with its surroundings, it needs opportunities to move around, explore and remember the space in its own way. A stable environment allows it to make active use of its remaining abilities rather than becoming entirely dependent on people. This may be the most important point in the story. A visually impaired dog does not need people to replace everything it has lost. What it needs is an environment in which its remaining senses can be used effectively, important signals remain consistent and people give it enough time to learn how to live in its new surroundings. For the dog that this man brought home, the journey may have begun with something as small as resting its head against him. But for that moment to develop into a stable life, what matters is not simply one act of kindness, but also patience, consistency and an environment suited to the way the dog experiences the world.

🫶【Mechanism Study of the Tesla Optimus Hand Patent】🫶 I built a quick functional mock-up yesterday based on the newly published Tesla Optimus hand patent filings. It looks rough because I wanted to validate the mechanism as quickly as possible, but it is fully functional. What impressed me most is that the interesting part is not just the unusual joint geometry itself. My reading is that the real elegance of this design is in reducing active cable count by using an elastic return / bias element instead of another extensor-side cable, while routing the distal control cable through the proximal joints carefully enough that distal motion remains controllable with reduced unwanted coupling. The rolling-contact style joint also works surprisingly well in practice. What I respect most about these filings is that they do not read like “look at this clever mechanism.” They read like a serious attempt to solve the real problems of a tendon-driven humanoid hand: cable count, routing through multiple joints, manufacturability, and assembly. There is a very strong sense here that the design was pushed not only toward motion, but toward production. This mock-up is simplified for functional reproduction. My prototype uses a single-resin flexure, not the multilayer composite flexible member described in the patent filings, so the extension-side hysteresis is probably not representative of the intended behavior. I also did not fully reproduce the cable-support / control-channel geometry shown in the filings, so some residual inter-joint crosstalk remains in this mock-up. Sora 2 has the capabilities to make an entire anime episode with time and effort. This is a turning point for generative AI models and it is terrifying to think what is next to come. The difference between Sora and Sora 2 is absolutely staggering. Yes, this looks cool. I put the time into it to make it as close to art as possible. This was not simple to make and not just prompting and throwing it in some editor. Every frame is generated of another scene and even the reference image for characters I used to start this project were AI generated. This was all created with 10 second clips pulled apart and chunked out into the final product. Regardless of the imagery you see, I did not directly use any artist's art for this video. This 10-minute video was generated over the course of a week from more than 700 text prompts. It was built on technology trained by scraping the uncredited, uncompensated contributions of countless human artists and animators. The creation of this single video consumed an enormous amount of energy and water, equivalent to powering a home for days and requiring hundreds of liters of fresh water for cooling. But that is nothing. In the 10 minutes you spend watching this, the global network of AI video generators will create over 6,250 more short videos. The combined energy required for that 10 minutes of global creation is enough to power an average household for nearly 2 years. - It's a double-edged sword. While AI uses immense amount of energy has clear immoral issues with scalping the hard work of artists, this also provides those a medium who have potentially spent their life attempting to draw out the ideas in their head and failing to grasp it. My sister is an artist, I grew up always attempting to draw but never could get the image in my head on paper, I've spent the better part of over 20 years to teach myself through watching videos and practice, however I don't have steady hands and frankly have just been unable to make any vision come to life. Which brings me to the conflict here. This would have been a dream of mine to be able to get frames created and flesh out the story in my head. To make this video professionally, it would be an absurd amount of money. A small studio by itself would be over a million dollars just to start up. To hire a studio would be most likely over ~200k. I would love to make this story I have in my head through legit and traditional means, I would love to start a Kickstarter to get funding and hire artists, voice actors, and a production team. However I know that would most likely be an impossible reach that would further fuel the hate. Regardless, I understand the worry this causes. The fear this produces. However, we can't just ignore where AI is currently at and just tell people not to use it or even worse threaten people who use it. People will always use the shiny new toy in front of them, so the real question is how do we either make it work for us and work along side it, or how do we ACTUALLY implement a method to protect art rather than tell people to not use it. Respect your artists. Review their ToS and don't upload their hard work to a model without permission.

This is one-shot assembly: you show examples of what to build, and the robot just does it. (see original post: To share more on how this works, the robot is controlled in real time by a neural network that takes in video pixels and outputs 100Hz actions. The video below is part of the raw input passed directly into the model. I also like this view (at 1x speed) because it shows more of the (I think very cool) subtle moments of dexterity near the fingertips 👌 One-shot assembly seemed like a dream even just a year ago — it's not easy. It requires both the high-level reasoning of "what to build" (recognizing the geometry of the structures presented by the human), and the low-level visuomotor control of "how to build it" (purposefully re-orienting individual pieces and nudging them together in place). While possible to manually engineer a complex system for this (e.g. w/ hierarchical control, or explicit state representations), we were curious if our own Foundation model could do it all end-to-end with just some post-training data. Surprisingly, it just worked. Nothing about the recipe is substantially different than any other demo we’ve run in the past, and we’re excited about its implications on model capabilities: • On contextual reasoning, these models can (i) attend to task-related pixels in the peripheral view of the video inputs, and (ii) retain this knowledge in-context while ignoring irrelevant background. This is useful for generalizing to a wide range of real workflows: e.g. paying attention to what’s coming down the conveyor line, or glancing at the instructions displayed on a nearby monitor. • On dexterity, these models can produce contact-rich "commonsense" behaviors that can be difficult to pre-program or write language instructions for e.g. rolling a brick slightly to align its studs against the bottom of another, re-grasping to get a better grip or to move out of the way before a forceful press, or gently pushing the corners of a brick against the mat to rotate it in hand and stand it up vertically (i.e. extrinsic dexterity). These aspects work together to form a capability that resembles fast adaptation — a hallmark of intelligence, relevant for real use cases. This has also expanded my own perspective on what's possible with robot learning, using a recipe that's repeatable for many more skills. This milestone stands on top of the solid technical foundations we’ve built here at Generalist: hardcore controls & hardware, all in-house built models, and a data engine that "just works." We're a small group of hyper-focused engineers, and hands-down the highest talent-density team I’ve ever worked with. We're accelerating and scaling aggressively towards unlocking next-generation robot intelligence. Building Legos is just one example, and it's clear to me that we're headed towards a future where robots can do just about anything we want them to. Its coming, and we're going to make it happen.
