Many reports and on-the-ground developments point to a regional project led by the United Arab Emirates that operates behind the scenes through local proxies and questionable alliances, with the aim of fragmenting states and gaining control over strategic ports and maritime chokepoints. This approach is closely linked to political... and security coordination with Israel, serving narrow interests at the expense of regional stability and Arab national security. In Yemen, this role became evident through political and military support for Aidarous Al-Zubaidi and the Southern Transitional Council. What began as influence over southern areas escalated into attempts to impose a fait accompli by force, including efforts to seize control of Hadramout and Al-Mahra—two regions of extreme strategic and security importance to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This was pursued through the creation of armed formations outside the framework of the legitimate state, the fragmentation of society, and the engineering of internal conflicts that threaten Yemen’s unity and the security of its neighbors. In Sudan, the UAE has been linked to backing specific military actors, contributing to the outbreak and prolongation of a devastating internal war that crippled state institutions and pushed the country toward de facto division. This chaos has opened the door to competition over gold, ports, and influence along the Red Sea, undermining any prospect of a stable and sovereign Sudan. In Libya, a similar pattern emerged through the financing and arming of forces operating outside the political process. This prolonged the conflict, sabotaged state-building efforts, and turned Libya into a proxy battlefield, draining its resources and exploiting its strategic location and energy wealth. In Somalia, the UAE supported separatist entities and port projects conducted outside the authority of the federal government in Mogadishu. These moves undermined Somali sovereignty and sought to impose new realities on the ground, granting Abu Dhabi direct leverage over one of the world’s most critical maritime routes near Bab Al-Mandab and the Gulf of Aden. This recurring pattern reveals a single approach: weakening sovereign states, marginalizing national armies, empowering militias, controlling ports, and then building political and economic ties with Israel under the banner of investment—while Arab peoples bear the cost. Despite all this, such schemes have failed when confronted by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia is not an arena for manipulation nor a state that can be encircled by militias or pressured through ports. It is a nation rooted in legitimacy, supported by its people, and anchored in deep Arab and Islamic standing. I would first like to reaffirm my full support for President General Joseph Aoun in the path he is leading to protect Lebanon, restore the full role of the state, and guide the country toward a just and lasting peace that preserves its sovereignty and serves the interests of its people. Any serious approach to saving Lebanon requires courage in decision-making and wisdom in managing sensitive national issues, foremost among them stability, security, and sovereignty. From this perspective, we support the option of direct negotiations with Israel in a manner that safeguards Lebanon’s supreme national interest, ensures stability in the South, and reaffirms the rights and full sovereignty of the Lebanese state and opens the way toward a real and lasting peace. We also reaffirm our full support for the government and its decisions in every sovereign step that restores the confidence of the Lebanese people and the international community in the Lebanese state and its institutions. In this context, we call on the government to move forward in dismantling the parallel and illegal economy, shutting down institutions such as “Al-Qard Al-Hassan,” preventing smuggling and illegal trade through all border crossings, ports, and the airport, and restructuring the banking sector and financial system to prevent the future financing and arming of militias by drying up their illicit financial resources. We also believe it is necessary to suspend the implementation of the 1955 boycott law, as its continued use as a tool of intimidation and fear obstructs the confidence-building measures required to achieve a genuine and lasting peace and prevents Lebanon from advancing toward realistic solutions that serve its highest national interests. I also stress the urgent need to accelerate the implementation of the decision to make Beirut a safe and weapons-free city under the sole authority of the state. The delay in beginning implementation is no longer justified and is draining the Lebanese people’s confidence in the state’s ability to enforce its decisions. Making Beirut free of weapons must be a sovereign Lebanese decision fully implemented by the Lebanese state, because the capital cannot recover its natural role and its political, economic, and cultural symbolism except under the sole authority of the state. The success of this step in Beirut would gradually pave the way for extending this process to the South, then to the North and the Bekaa, thereby consolidating the authority of the Lebanese state over all its territory and strengthening comprehensive national stability. At the same time, we call on Israel to fully abide by any understandings or arrangements reached, and to carry out a gradual withdrawal from Lebanese territory in a manner that guarantees stability and respects Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial unity, leading to a fully sovereign Lebanese state free from any illegal or foreign military presence. In parallel, we believe that the issue of general amnesty can no longer tolerate delay or political exploitation. The adoption of a fair and comprehensive general amnesty law has become a national and humanitarian necessity, Away from political point-scoring and political disputes. What is required today is a balanced approach that preserves the rights of the wronged, takes into account the humanitarian conditions of prisoners, and at the same time safeguards the dignity of the military institution while preserving security and stability. His address came as a firm rebuttal to the statement made earlier by the UAE’s representative and laid bare the full extent of Abu Dhabi’s involvement in arming, funding, and coordinating attacks that have led to mass killings across Sudan, particularly in El Fasher. Al-Harith Idriss began his reply with a sharp assertion: “There is no civil war in Sudan. It is a war and aggression waged by the UAE through its regional proxy, the Rapid Support Militia.” He emphasized that attempts to frame the conflict as an internal power struggle between two sides are a deliberate distortion meant to conceal external aggression. Despite the defeat and dissolution of the Southern Transitional Council (STC) after Saudi Arabia's 🇸🇦 offensive, South Yemen 🇾🇪 civilians continue to protest. The STC was the UAE 🇦🇪 backed militia that was controling part of South Yemen and launched a large offensive that nearly managed to merge the pro-saudi internationnaly recognized Yemen and the STC into a single state in late december 2025. Since Yemen is already cut between the north (Houthis rebels, shia muslim) and the south/east (STC, gov., sunni muslim), part of the southern population wanted to revive South Yemen/South Arabia state., which was already independant between 1967 and 1990. When the STC launched its offensive, it didn't face any large resistance and was welcomed by part of the population. However, the situation quickly reversed when Saudi Arabia and Yemen's army intervened and destroyed in a few days the dreams of independence of the pro-UAE STC. However, the population continues to widely protest in most of South Yemen's cities, calling for independence. For now, this is not the KSA's priority since it would prefer a unified state to two Yemeni states at its southern border. A pro-Iran and pro-Emirati state at its southern border would have been a nightmare for Riyadh...

This is verbatim; I have not added any opinion. 'The process through which the Ethiopian state was formed is rather unique on the African continent. In most parts of the world, states are formed through conflict, violence, and bloodshed. That does not make Ethiopia unique. What makes Ethiopia unique—particularly in the African context—is that the violence was carried out by indigenous, native forces. The main protagonists in this process were Ethiopians themselves. By contrast, in the history of most African countries, state formation was the outcome of colonial conquest, with significant involvement of European actors. So, we have a state formation process driven by local political forces, but we did not have the opportunity to strengthen or cement that process through a social contract, nor did we have the chance to heal the wounds and contradictions that emerged during state formation. As a result, the legitimacy of the state was questioned and contested by some. This contestation has persisted throughout the formation of the state and has been exacerbated by subsequent events. Some have challenged the very legitimacy of the Ethiopian state; others have contested its nature, its vision, its identity, and its narratives. Some have found it difficult to accept its institutions and their configurations. Thus, there have always been fundamental contradictions stemming from Ethiopia’s state formation process, and we have not adequately addressed them in a way that would create consensus among key actors. Another layer we need to consider is that we have a very violent and autocratic political culture. Whenever there are contests for power, political differences, or disagreements over policy or institutional arrangements, the method of resolving them has more often than not been conflict. Imposing one’s will and vision on others through violence and force has been how we have conducted politics for generations. And once in power, using autocratic means to consolidate authority has been common practice. This autocratic and forceful approach, combined with the flawed state formation process, has produced many wounds, grievances, and violations. We have not been able to address these in a way that is satisfactory to most Ethiopians. On top of this, attempts to resolve these problems have often been divisive, emphasizing differences at the expense of what unites us. As a result, our politics has become polarized and ethnic-based.

We reviewed the latest developments following the framework announced in Washington on June 26 and discussed the historic opportunity now before Lebanon to restore its sovereignty, strengthen its state institutions, and reclaim its national decision-making. I reaffirmed my full support for this process because, for the first time, it provides a practical and internationally backed framework capable of returning the exclusive authority over war and peace to the Lebanese state, ending Lebanon’s role as a battleground for regional conflicts, and putting an end to all forms of foreign interference in our national affairs—particularly Iranian interference, which has undermined Lebanon’s sovereignty and drawn our country into conflicts that do not serve its national interests. I also reiterated my full support for President Joseph Aoun, Prime Minister Dr. Nawaf Salam, and the Government. Success will require a unified national position behind the constitutional institutions of the Lebanese state and a shared determination not to lose this historic opportunity. We believe the Washington framework represents a historic political and security roadmap toward a just, lasting, and internationally supported peace between Lebanon and Israel. It builds on previous agreements, particularly the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement of November 27, 2024, while introducing the political and implementation mechanisms necessary to fulfill the commitments already undertaken by the Lebanese state. Its ultimate objective is to restore the state’s exclusive authority throughout Lebanese territory, place all weapons under the sole authority of the state, and fully reestablish Lebanon’s sovereignty. It is important to recall that the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement was approved by the Government of Prime Minister Najib Mikati on behalf of the Lebanese Republic. That government rested politically and parliamentarily on the support of Hezbollah, the Amal Movement, and their allies. The framework announced in Washington does not replace those commitments; it provides the mechanisms necessary to implement them. Those who accepted these obligations yesterday cannot reject their implementation today. Respect for the continuity of the Lebanese state and its international commitments is not a political preference—it is a constitutional and national obligation. Any retreat would undermine Lebanon’s credibility and weaken its standing with both its Arab partners and the international community. Lebanon has no realistic alternative to this path. We either restore our sovereignty, rebuild confidence with the Arab world and the international community, and secure a future of stability and prosperity, or we remain trapped in conflict, isolation, and economic decline. I also proposed to His Excellency that the Government adopt, alongside the implementation of the agreed security arrangements, a comprehensive national strategy for recovery, reconstruction, and sustainable economic development in every area where the state progressively resumes its responsibilities. As the Lebanese Armed Forces deploy and the state assumes exclusive security authority, reconstruction and development must advance in parallel. Security alone will not be sufficient. The Lebanese state must return with all of its institutions. Homes and infrastructure must be rebuilt, productive investment encouraged, jobs created for young people, and quality education and healthcare restored. Only a visible and effective state presence can rebuild citizens’ confidence and establish lasting stability. Lebanon’s recent history has demonstrated that where the state withdraws, parallel institutions inevitably emerge. The responsibility of the state today is to reclaim that space completely, ensuring that no parallel structures remain and that no authority exists other than the constitutional institutions of the Lebanese Republic. The restoration of the Lebanese state is not simply a political aspiration. It is a comprehensive national project founded on full sovereignty, one state, one army, one legitimate authority over arms, strong institutions, a productive economy, equal justice under the law, and a future worthy of all Lebanese.

Nigeria, Saudi Arabia sign Five-Year Defence, Military Cooperation Agreement The Federal Government and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen defence and military cooperation between both nations. The agreement, according to a statement by Special Assistant on media to the Minister of State, Defence, Ahmed Dan Wudil, will cover strategic collaboration across security, military training, intelligence sharing, defence production, and joint operations for sustainable security development. The pact was signed on behalf of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by the Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Mohammed Bello Matawalle, while Dr. Khaleed H. Al-Biyari signed for the Government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It noted that the agreement marks a significant step in boosting bilateral relations, cooperation and enhancing collaborative efforts in tackling emerging security challenges in the country. The Defence Ministry said it welcomes the development, noting the current security challenges in some parts of the country will soon be over.
