Mapping technique: use H3 hexagonal binning to make dense point data intelligible at low zooms. Shown here: the new H3 integration in the freestiler vector tiling tool in action. 146 million jobs are binned by hierarchical hexagons, then mapped by the most common job category. Hexagons give way to smaller shapes, then individual points, with a "fade-on-zoom" effect in Mapbox. Broad patterns when zoomed out, granular detail when zoomed in.

The project repurposes retired coal-fired generation infrastructure. The broader site will be developed into a clean energy hub, with potential future additions including wind, solar, hydrogen production and additional energy storage capacity. Commercial operation is targeted for early 2026.
