Analysis on Marco Silva's pressing trap and how it worked in a match.

We are working on a game like practice with a target team (Fulham) and a sparring team (Man United). The target team (whites) are the main focus of the session, they would normally be majority starters on the weekend, we will work on the pressing trap with this team.

The sparring team (reds) can be a mix of starters and non-starters, if you play starters vs non-starters this can cause friction between teams and potentially laziness in the non-starters, KEEP THEM GUESSING. Or you can play left side vs right side.

We will manipulate the incentives of the sparring team to give the target team opportunities to set the pressing trap. In this practice we want them to play to the wing-backs so if the sparring team play through the wing-backs and score they get extra points.

Practice Design - We want the target team to focus on their 4-4-2 mid block structure and focus on blocking the centre. We want to replicate United structure with the wing-backs and 3 CB's.

Target team - They are looking to press to win the ball and score, to incentivise the press we will give them 2 points if they score. They have 3 goals to defend to encourage the team keeping their shape until they see the pressing trigger and can shift side to side as a unit.

However to start we will not tell the target team what the pressing trigger is as we want them to discover it through how the sparring team is playing and as we have incentivised the sparring team to play through the wing-backs, they should start to see this trend.

Sparring team - They get extra points for scoring in any of the 3 goals if they play through a wing-back, meaning when the wing-backs gets it if they dribble forward or play forward and to team scores from it that counts as extra points. 1 point for scoring in any goal.

Coaching Points - Curved run - We want the run from the wide midfielder to be a curved out to in press, but why? So this stops the wing-back being able to play the channel, this forces them to take a touch backwards with 2 options to play inside or backwards.

Jump the next pass - If the curved run is done right, the team will know the next pass either in to a packed middle or backwards. So the surrounding players should set up the press and be ready to jump the next pass. Tips - - Move just before the pass - Approach from blindside
