Mark Cuban thinks human-shaped robots will fail within 5–10 years. Instead, Robot will be optimally shaped for whatever work environment they will work. Homes will be redesigned around specialised robots, with human living space kept separate

@PageLyndon Cuban is a buffoon who got lucky during dotcom and bought a sports franchise. He knows nothing.

You really can't have a 125 lbs robot falling over on a child or stepping on an animal. Life safety needs to be solved before you will see mass adoption. Factories and manu. They will be fine to operate first

Home robots will likely be humanoid just because they are better adapted to the space. People fell in love with Wall-E and Eve, a humanoid robot with the right attributes will work well.

Maybe to some degree, but humanoids will be everywhere. Redesigning homes takes generations, so only new/rich homes will have specialized robots.

He’s wrong, at least for a generation. Our physical world is human shakes. Might be right longer term though.

the shape is not the hard part. contact-rich manipulation and the safety case are, and a differently shaped arm has the same problem in a different silhouette

This was foretold in Ray Bradbury's classic short story, "There Will Come Soft Rains". AI summary of plot: In a post-apocalyptic future, a single fully automated "smart home" stands alone in an otherwise completely obliterated city after a devastating nuclear war. Completely unaware that its human owners have been vaporized - surviving only as silhouettes burned into the charred exterior wall - the house faithfully carries out its programming. The automated systems prepare meals, vacuum the floors using mechanical mice, make beds, and announce the time. In the evening, the home's entertainment system automatically reads a poem to the empty room: Sara Teasdale's "There Will Come Soft Rains," which describes nature reclaiming a world long after humanity has vanished. Ultimately, the house is destroyed not by the war itself, but by nature: a stray tree branch crashes through a kitchen window, spilling cleaning solvent onto the stove and sparking a massive fire. The automated systems desperately attempt to fight the flames, but they run out of water, and the house burns to the ground, leaving only a single malfunctioning wall left repeating the automated date.

Mark Cuban has never worked on AI and robotics, how did he win authority on the future of robotics and AI?

...He thinks it's easier to redesign everyones houses for specialized robots than build a robot that can work in them as is? 😭

That actually makes sense. Human shape isn't the optimal design for most robotic work anyway.

I think theres probably a niche subset of whats currently marketed for humanoids.. its probably not 80% of the usecases thats currently being advertised

Interesting take, purpose-built robots do make more sense than copying the human form. You and @SophiaBlackkod are two of my favorite follows for seeing where robotics and markets are headed next.

Mark Cuban doesn't have the vision. Of course humanoid robots will be massively deployed in the next 5-10 years. The progress of humanoid robots these last 3-4 years (Boston Dynamics, Tesla, Asian companies) has been astonishing!

@Katie_Roof An interesting point though is that a lot of current spaces, both residential and commercial are designed around the idea of humans operating in them - makes an argument for either reworking those spaces entirely or working with the current layout/design

and what about the robots in the living space? What happens when your power goes out, you just cant cook a meal? how do you add functionality without adding expensive new hardware and expanding the house the beauty of humanoid designs is that they can do anything you can do

Cuban: humanoids die in 5–10y — specialize + co-design spaces. Warehouses already proved it. Stack ↓ #Robotics #AI

We're not going to redesign houses to allow robots to be a bit cheaper or more efficient, especially when they'll be getting cheaper and more efficient every year anyway.

Billionaire investor Mark Cuban predicts humanoid robots will "fail miserably" within a decade: While most of the industry is racing to build robots shaped like humans, Mark Cuban thinks the entire premise is wrong. "I think everybody's making this push for humanoid robots. I think they might have a five-year lifespan and then they'll fail miserably. Maybe 10." His prediction covers more than just the machines. Asked whether he's referring to the companies or the devices, he answers: "Both. Both." His reasoning challenges the industry's core assumption: "Everybody defaults to well, we live in a human world and humanoids will take the place of humans for various functions particularly in the home. And I think there's just no chance." The evidence? Look at the places where automation already works at massive scale: "If you look at warehouses and what Amazon does, they're not humanoid robots carrying boxes. They're robots that are designed to fit the environment." But what about homes? Cuban has heard the counterargument that "a house is a house. You need a humanoid," and he rejects it entirely: "I think houses are going to be redesigned completely so that whatever the optimal robot is that allows it to simplify the house, that's where houses will go." Mark Cuban imagines robots shaped more like spiders or ants, working in houses where the pantry, refrigerator, and washing machines are hidden behind the garage. "That way you could redesign it so all the living space was for people because you know that the robots aren't going to be full form humanoids. They're going to be whatever the optimal shape is." His conclusion captures the whole thesis in one line: "You design the house to fit the robot and you design the robot to fit the house."
