I've been trying to implement a parallel rigid body solver. It's a tricky problem in physics to solve a huge pile of objects on multiple threads. I've tried graph coloring and other means of splitting up the problem, but so far a locking primitive per body is the most efficient..

Cliff Asness (the co-founder of AQR, who manages billions) on the one belief about that most of his peers would disagree with: "as we move into a world where machine learning is becoming a bigger part of the quant toolkit, we are big believers that economic intuition as a restraint on overfitting is still pretty important." "finance is still a high noise to signal ratio place. in that world, overfitting is a problem." "but one thing ML has done is point out that underfitting is also a problem. and you have to balance the two." "not using these techniques was probably underfitting and missing some of the true complication." this is the most balanced take on ML in trading i've heard. it's both problems exist simultaneously and the skill is balancing them. but for the regular retail trader, I would still say stay far away from machine learning, you will likely just overfit.

Terence Tao thinks AI is already very good at using existing, well-understood math techniques to solve problems. An important question is how many open problems in math could be solved this way, without developing any new ideas. An extreme case of a proof like this is the four-color theorem, which was proved by checking a thousand examples one-by-one. If there are lots of problems that are vulnerable to just mechanically applying existing techniques, AI could start to produce new math results incredibly rapidly. But these proofs might not help advance our civilization’s knowledge the way math has in the past.

If humanity is ever to expand beyond Earth and establish a self-sustaining base on another planet, it's critical that we solve this problem. Whether it's SpaceX or someone else, someone has to solve the problem, and we can have a hundred-fold reduction in the cost of spaceflight. That's what SpaceX has been trying to do, and really that's been the goal since the beginning of the company. So far, I've not been very successful in that regard, but I think we have a handle on it. Proud Boys Unmask Patriot Front Members at Rally: Today a group of Far Right Proud Boys confronted a group of FAR RIGHT Patriot Front racists, who had masks on. I need to say a few things about this video: 1) It's nice to see people standing up to racism regardless of who they support politically, and even if they are associated with the Proud Boys. 2) Many Republicans are claiming the masked men are 'Feds'. There is absolutely no evidence of this that I have seen, and this seems to be the go-to excuse for those trying to pretend racism is not a problem in America. 3) Violence is a never good, even against racist people. I am glad that some of their faces were revealed, but assaulting other people to get to that result is never the right move. 4) Both the Proud Boys and Patriot Front are far right extremist groups who do NOT represent the views of the vast majority on the right. It's important to understand this. Thoughts on the video?
