Matt Damon reveals Christopher Nolan wanted him to look lean and strong for his role in The Odyssey , says he stopped eating gluten and drinking beer Matt Damon: “And we were talking, we were just catching up about the kids and everything, and then about fifteen minutes into the call, he said, ‘Oh, I’m thinking of going back to work.’ And I’d like to offer you the central role.” “And he goes, ‘Don’t you wanna hear what it is?’ and I was like, ‘Sure.’ And he goes, ‘It’s a two word pitch, The Odyssey.’” “Yeah, it was like my heart skipped a beat, ’cause it’s just such an incredible part to play for an actor, of course. Of course. The role of a lifetime.” On the physical transformation: Interviewer: “From the time you found out that you were playing this role to the first day of rolling frame… how much time did you have?” Matt Damon: “Six months.” Interviewer: “How much weight did you have to lose or gain?” Matt Damon: “It was lose. He didn’t say specifically. He said, ‘I just want him to look lean and strong, like somebody who’s a veteran of the Trojan War and can handle himself.’ It just kind of took over my life.” “Every single day… it felt more like an athlete’s regimen. Everything’s weighed. Everything’s very, very intentional.” On the diet change: Interviewer: “I heard that you stopped eating gluten?” Matt Damon : “Yeah it turned out I didn’t know gluten’s in everything rice, potatoes, bread, pasta… all the stuff that we love. I had to give up beer too. That was tough. But I just felt so much better.”

Anne Hathaway says she’s only received one “perfect” from Christopher Nolan across the three films she’s made with him, admitting she cried and wrote it in her journal afterward. Matt Damon: Chris has a tendency to be a little circumspect, so when you do a really good job, he tends to go, “Yeah, good. Yeah, all right.” And that’s kind of it. It was pretty funny when we were making it because Zendaya came and did something, and the camera cut. There was this long pause, and Chris said, “Perfect.” Anne Hathaway: That’s next level. Matt Damon: I’ve done like three movies with him and never heard that. So, that was an experience. Brittany Broski: Hey, you’ll get there one day. Keep working. Matt Damon: I’m trying. Anne Hathaway: I’m not going to say what I’m about to say… but I’ve also made three films with him, and I have gotten one “perfect.” Matt Damon: You have? Anne Hathaway: I got one once. Matt Damon: God damn it. Anne Hathaway: I know, I’m sorry! It felt really good. It was amazing. I cried and wrote it in my journal. Brittany Broski: That’s so sweet. You got to remember it. Anne Hathaway: Yeah, I actually did go home and write in my journal every day on this one because there was so much happening, and I didn’t want it to turn into a blur. What was the thing you said about preparing for perfection and then letting it go? Matt Damon: Prepare within an inch of your life. Anne Hathaway: That’s it. You prepare within an inch of your life, but then you just go, “Okay, this is Chris’s show, and he’s the one who really sees the entire landscape.” So it becomes such a pleasure to let go. Matt Damon: He’s an easy guy to trust. He really knows what he’s doing.
