Matthew McConaughey in True Detective (2014) is on another level. His Rust Cohle performance is all slow-burn philosophy, broken memories, and haunted stillness, the kind of layered, precise acting that rewired his entire career. One of TV’s great turns.

Tom Cruise’s performance in The Last Samurai is one of the first things I bring up anytime someone ignorantly suggests that Cruise can’t act. Cruise is quietly vulnerable in this role & his physicality and dedication is impeccable. Cruise’s nonverbal acting in this film is some of the best of his career. Don’t ever question this man’s acting chops.

Watching two acting titans try to process this is just hilarious. McConaughey: I look at myself and I go I'm a samurai beetle. Pacino: Yeah. McConaughey: Right. Matthew McConaughey is back. His newest movie is the neo-Western crime thriller The Rivals of Amziah King & I’m pleased to see McConaughey back in the actor’s seat. I liked McConaughey’s performance in last year’s film The Lost Bus but he still hasn’t done anything that approaches The McConaissance. Here’s hoping we see a return to form from one of my favorite actors.

10 Cloverfield Lane has its flaws but John Goodman’s performance isn’t one of them. Goodman conceals his instability throughout most of the film & we never really know his true intentions until we reach the back half of the story.
