Kenneth Branagh’s career is unlike anyone else I can think of & it’s because this is a man who can do everything. Set aside his collaborations with Christopher Nolan, which have become commonplace at this point, Branagh can do comedy, he can do action, he can do Shakespeare - Hell, he can do Harry Potter. There’s no role/film/story that I don’t think Branagh could somehow weave himself into. It’s why I think Mayday (🌟🌟🌟🌟) is one of the year’s biggest surprises. Branagh is allowed to play freely with no rules - he’s exceptional.

Tuner (🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟) is now available on demand & it’s the second best film I’ve seen this year behind The Invite. At 88, Dustin Hoffman is still giving us Cinema magic. I can’t tell you how awesome it is seeing Hoffman contribute to such a good film at this stage of his life. Leo Woodall blew me away here. See this film.

Every last actor in Pressure (🌟🌟🌟🌟) kicks ass. That includes Andrew Scott & Brendan Fraser, who are the primary reasons I think you should see this film- in addition to a great story. Pressure feels like a film out of the ‘90s that’s not designed to win awards or break box office records. This is just a damn good movie worthy of your time.

Callum Turner’s performance in One Night Only (🌟🌟) is staggeringly bland. Prior to this film, I was lukewarm on Turner & didn’t really have strong opinions about him. But his comedic timing is really weak in this movie & his performance desperately lacks charisma. You guys know that Jack Nicholson is my all time favorite actor. He is the definition of charisma. In One Night Only? Turner is the anthesis of charisma. I don’t take pleasure in being so critical of Turner but I have to call balls & strikes as I see them.

The Weight (🌟🌟🌟🌟) is a fantastic film. Don’t tell me its box office numbers - I couldn’t care less. Not an award’s contender? Not my problem. I was held in pure captivity for 2 hours. Ethan Hawke is astounding here. Russell Crowe is equally excellent. This film had some 3:10 to Yuma vibes & I can’t get enough. Whoever you are reading this Tweet, I’m going to put pressure on you. I’m going to put the ball in your court: make time to see The Weight in a movie theater this weekend.

My rewatch of Spider-Man 2 (🌟🌟🌟🌟) yesterday was a total and utter blast. My full review is included below & I’d love for you to spend a few minutes giving it a read. I talk about the memories my sister and I have watching this film every time we visited my abuela in Madrid. Rewatching this made my weekend. Sam Raimi, you are my forever king.

Nirvana the Band the Show the Movie (🌟🌟🌟🌟) is a standout film released this year & has so much fucking heart, I can’t put it into words. I’m a huge fan of the man who directed this film, Matthew Johnson. I think he’s got a clear creative vision & at the end of the day, he’s flat-out funny. As I wrote in my lengthy review back in April, this film literally improved my mood. This is just another example of how great 2026 has been for Cinema.

I gave Coyote vs. Acme (🌟🌟🌟🌟) because at a time when we are all being suffocated by corporate greed, this film put two middle fingers to the sky. That’s all without mentioning I genuinely found this to be a funny, entertaining film. I’m often critical of life-action movies but this film is a total exception. I’m personally asking you to make time to see this in a theater.

The Gentlemen is Guy Ritchie at his best. I forced myself to revisit this film as a reminder that yes, Ritchie can actually make a good film. This after I nearly collapsed from boredom after watching Ritchie’s newest release In the Grey (🌟🌟) featuring Jake Gyllenhaal and Henry Cavill. In the Grey is not good. You can’t make that statement about The Gentlemen. This film’s release was really impacted by COVID, but man it’s a great movie.

Edward Norton is already a four time Oscar nominee, including for Best Actor for this film, American History X. I think Norton will likely become a five time nominee for his recent performance in Olivia Wilde’s The Invite (🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟), which I currently have rated as the year’s best film. Norton is sublime. Would love to see him get some Oscar love.

Leo Woodall is going to be a household name in short order. Woodall impressed the hell out of me in Tuner (🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟), as indicated by my review below. He also stood out in The White Lotus & last year’s film Nuremberg. This guy has star-potential. I think his ceiling is high.

David Strathairn has a small role in By Any Means (🌟🌟🌟🌟) but just seeing him on screen even for a few minutes pleases me. At 77, I have no idea how much Strathairn has left in the tank. What I do know is this man is a phenomenal actor. I truly can’t say if a David Strathairn-like actor exists in my generation today. This man is sheer class. He can act with the best of them.
