Progress always comes down to a small number of people working heads down on a decades-long mission and seriously holding the line on what it means to join the team and contribute. It's a constant fight against mediocrity, and unless you have a berserker at the helm and an airtight chain of accountability, you will accomplish nothing.

If you don't measure and enforce a standard, performance will inevitably decay. It's the gravity of mediocrity. Most people doing most things operate as effort minimizers. When no real bar is set, performance tends to zero.

When you aim higher or achieve more, some will resent or undermine you.

Believe it or not, this is not what REAL Life team dynamics R like, except for those with blind belief in the 'Cult of Unity.' Every team has at least 3 segments: a) Believers; b) 50/50s; and, c) Non-believers. Successful teams find a way which finds effective space for all 3.
