Where are we in the consumer AI cycle? I went on Bloomberg Technology yesterday to share my thoughts from 2+ years of studying the data 👇 1. We are still so early. In our a16z ranking of the top 50 AI consumer sites, ChatGPT (700M WAUs) has the lead on #2 Gemini by ~10x. And, more than half the list is either general LLM tools (text box as UI!) or creative tools that benefit from hallucination. 2. ...but, models are improving in reasoning and reliability to the point where they can now start supporting use cases that need accuracy and consistency. Ex. health, personal finance, productivity (emails, spreadsheets, and other knowledge work). 3. Big tech is waking up. Google is making waves with both the Gemini series and creative models (Veo 3, nano banana). Grok went 0 -> 20M+ MAUs in <1 year! Alibaba + Bytedance both have top consumer products. Meta still lags - but recent acquisitions may help. 4. AI is going global. Local winners are emerging, especially where products are censored (ex. China) - Quark, Qwen, Kimi have all taken off. The U.S. becomes the biggest market for int'l builders "exporting" their innovation - ex. Manus, Lovable, Eleven Labs. 5. Moats are emerging. 14 cos have made every top 50 web rank (five lists!) Brand, data, + traditional network effects are kicking in. But, consumers won't stick on products where hype is high but value prop isn't there - ex. Deepseek has fallen off everywhere ex-China. 6. The "developer" market is exploding. Pre-AI, it would have been unprecedented to see developer-focused products rival consumer ones on usage. But we see Replit, Lovable, AI Studio, Cursor, and more in our top ranks as vibe coding expands the TAM.

Episode #92: How AI Changes Governments & Business Models Mike Vichich is the Co-founder and CEO of Pursuit, which helps companies drive more revenue from the public sector. We talk about how AI is changing Helmer’s 7 Powers, how it’s impacting the government, if DOGE is actually working, building a startup in the Midwest (specifically Ann Arbor, MI), and how to disagree with your team. We also get into Mike’s prior company Wisely, and how they went from $11 in the bank account and unable to run payroll for six months, to over $10 million ARR and a $187 million exit to public company Olo a few years later. Thanks to Jack Altman and Blake Robbins for their help brainstorming good topics for Mike! Full episode here on X, or grab a link in the replies.
