Evidence no longer changes minds, because some beliefs are trained to be immune to proof. When ideology replaces curiosity, facts become enemies. Data is not examined but rejected, Inwould say even feared. I don't think its a strange as you may think it is. What we actually are seeing is a new religion forming. Even if it is secular - it still has all the normal component of a religion. If you strip “religion” down to its functional components rather than its supernatural claims, what you’re describing lines up almost perfectly. Religions emerge when a society needs shared meaning, moral coordination, authority, and a way to resolve uncertainty about the future. They provide an explanatory frame for why things are the way they are, a set of values that feel non-negotiable, rituals that reinforce belonging, and institutions that mediate truth and legitimacy. A secular religion doesn’t need gods. It needs axioms. It needs a story about progress, danger, salvation, and sin. It needs priesthoods (experts, credentialed authorities), scriptures (white papers, “the science,” policy frameworks), heresies (misinformation, disallowed questions), and rituals (public declarations, symbolic compliance, repeated affirmations). Even excommunication still exists, just under different names. The reason it feels uncanny is because modern culture insists it has outgrown religion. So when the same psychological and social machinery reappears, people mislabel it as “politics,” “culture,” or “technology.” But those are just the surfaces. The underlying function is identical: collective meaning under uncertainty. I think this also explains why it spreads so fast. Traditional religions used to answer existential questions about death, purpose, and order. In a hyper-complex world with opaque systems, algorithmic power, and accelerating change, people need something that tells them who to trust, what is good, what is dangerous, and where moral authority lives. A secular religion fills that gap without requiring metaphysics. The risk, as with all religions, isn’t that it exists. The risk is when its doctrines become unfalsifiable, when moral certainty replaces truth-seeking, and when dissent becomes moral failure rather than intellectual disagreement. That’s usually the moment when a belief system stops being a coordinating framework and starts becoming a control structure. The First Amendment assumes a very specific ontology: religion is something recognizable. It has churches, clergy, doctrines, scriptures, and explicit metaphysical claims. The state is barred from endorsing or enforcing those. But it says nothing about belief systems that perform the same role while denying they are religious. If a belief system declares itself “secular,” “scientific,” or “policy-based,” it can permeate government and institutions without ever triggering Establishment Clause scrutiny, even if it functions identically to a religion. The courts don’t test for function. They test for form. That’s the critical mismatch.
