Liberal women with degrees built this

True, but many of these builders trained through guild apprenticeships that lasted 10–15 years, which was essentially the university system of their time.

Every man who did this went through a guild apprenticeship where he spent a decade learning to do it. People teach each other useful things that get passed down. That's basically the premise of education.

Stupid anti-education bullshit. The engineers certainly studied physics and architecture.

Oh, they had degrees, they just weren't pieces of paper. Their degrees were the 33rd degree.

@sherrydevillie2 In those days, the grandest, most ornate, most glorious buildings were churches and Cathedrals. The bigger the better. The Craftsmen who designed and built these beautiful creations understood that their work was giving glory to God. How times have changed.

There were no degrees given back then. They were talented artisans, scientists, and engineers because they were taught, tutored, and educated.

They had a very rigid system for training their workers.

@vokaufmann Men that didn’t sit around all day watching NFL and knew physics and math built that. Big difference.

The people who built these places spent around 7 years as an apprentice and at least 3 years as a journeyman before they became a master and were allowed to have a major role in the planning of design of these structures. That is a lot more work and experience required than a 4 year degree.

Baccio Pontelli was formally trained in Florence as an architect. He would have been given a writ of merit for his studies. So in fact someone with a degree did in fact build it.

Men back in that era spent their whole lifetimes learning their trades and refining them. Dedication to quality is unparalleled in today’s buildings. The craftsmanship speaks for itself. These buildings are still standing while houses built today literally fall apart in under a decade.

Silly statement. All of the main builders and architects very quite highly educated. And lower rank builders had to belong to mason guilds which were very regulated and strict, and yes you had to go through proper training a a series of exams in order to work.

As amazing as photographs and videos are of this space, they are no substitute for standing there. The first time I walked through those doors, I was a 4th-year architecture student on my way to a professional degree (only mentioning this to make the point: I had studied it more than most). And for all my knowledge (to this day I can sketch the plan view from memory and name every designer involved), none of that prepared me for walking in—for seeing it with my own eyes, for the smells, for the sounds, for the tactile sensations, the atmosphere. It was truly majestic and awe-inspiring. Those words aren’t enough 😂 … but it’s the best I’ve got.

Men who spent years as apprentices to master architects/builders/stonemasons, et al, pretty much qualified as having degrees. They didn’t just suddenly say, ‘hey I can do this’. It took them years of slow learning and practice.

What a stupid claim. Those builders spent decades learning how to build and most certainly had degrees.

It was paid largely by indulgences issued by the Pope. Even as a non-religious person I would have bought several to fund these amazing artists. What a heavenly masterpiece. Pope Julius II was a true patron of the arts.

No. It was built by men who went through training from experienced other men. College doesn’t mean a degree. It can mean an apprenticeship.
