A local utility company in Illinois has plans to help lower residents electrical bills They will be requiring new data centers and planned data centers to sign 10 year contracts saying they will be responsible for paying for upgrade costs and electricity usage costs “That means any new data centers would be on the hook for power upgrades and any energy they plan to use, even if the data center ends up not getting built or if they don't use as much power as planned or if they close. So if they use the power that they're applying for, then they'll pay their fair share of the cost of maintaining and building our grid through their rates”

They're using land previously planned for homes” - 55 homes were purchased for nearly $1 million per house and knocked down to build data centers outside of Chicago - Amazon paid $700 million for land so they could build a data center instead of homes - Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, and Alphabet are spending more money on data centers than the US spent on railroads in the the interstate highway system in the 1950s, and more than the US spent on the Apollo space program States are choosing data centers over homes.
