Over the weekend, I added multiplayer "paint ball" dogfight to Tiny Skies, so players can fly around pelting each other with colourful paint balls, just for fun. I tried meshy and tripo to generate some 3D models for the game and the mesh vertices count are really high and lags the game a lot (probably because my game is a globe with thousands of objects - albeit mostly instanced). To my surprise, I found Gemini 3.1 Pro to be really quite good at generating good looking 3D models that are low in poly count. It generated 3D models at a much higher quality than Opus 4.6, Sonnet 4.6 and GPT 5.4. You can see the upgraded biplane models and some objects in the video below. #vibejam

It looked like whatever the hologram was that was being generated, it hadn't quite worked. And it's interesting because I asked somebody about this at a relatively high level in the defense community just this week, and they said to me, Ross, if you were the US Air Force and the White House, would you want to admit that there are objects operating with total impunity over the continental United States that we can't track? We can't detect, we don't know where they're coming from or where they're going to. We don't know who's responsible for them, and more importantly, we can bring them down. Would you want to admit that? And the answer is no. And it's interesting because more and more, I think it's a bunch of A-type males in the US military who just can't bring themselves to admit that despite the expenditure of trillions of dollars, the security and defense and integrity of the national airspace of the United States cannot be guaranteed. Adobe.. has released a tool that combines Generative Gaussian Splats with a Diffusion layer and it's not all over the internet? WHAT IS GOING ON :D I had to test this out ofc! Substance 3D viewer, the new 3d viewer just released by Adobe, not only supports viewing of a large, large list of 3d formats, but it also supports generating of 3d models as Gaussian Splats. Combine that with the built-in 3d to image functionality and you basically have at least a few of the steps I've been doing for the last year or so using multiple tools. Exciting stuff! The new Photoshop Beta also supports the 3D viewer and you can import 3d files directly in photoshop as smart objects linked to the viewer. The elements you prompt in based on your models, can be easily exported to your clipboard without backgrounds making it very easy to use this in your normal image editing workflows. I have a suspicion that we'll see much more of this in other Adobe tools and I'm very curious to see this used for things like this in more 3d tools than "just" Adobe Neo (which is fantastic btw). #adobe #art #gaussiansplatting

OTD 28 years ago "The Strike" aired, and the world learned about "Festivus." We spoke with Dan O'Keefe whose father created Festivus. Dan was Not a fan of the episode, did Not want the episode to air, and to him, Festivus brings back deep rooted trauma. Dan explains: The way people adopted it, I didn’t see that coming. You gotta understand, I’ve been saying this for a while, yeah, that was my father, he was mentally ill and a drunk, but extremely brilliant. For whatever reason he invented this weird fucking extra holiday that was celebrated at random times. It did not have a set date. It was extremely upsetting. It was like borderline child endangerment, and it was not fun. So my brothers and I had this deal: you do not talk about it outside of the house, and we just try to pretend it’s not happening. But I didn’t pitch it, I didn’t want it to go in. I hoped it would fail and be edited out, and nevertheless, the damn thing survived. The reality is far weirder. I have the CDs that were remastered from the cassette tapes my dad used to make during the annual recording of this insanity, which is mostly him screaming about internal Reader’s Digest politics in a deep slur while my brothers are crying and my mom is telling him to simmer down. That was not something I agitated for, quite the reverse. So how do I feel about it taking off? I try to block it out. This holiday was basically an encapsulation of alcoholism and mental illness into one neat little wrapper. I was as surprised as anyone. I was not a booster of this. I was surprised it got on the air. I am beyond surprised that it seems to be something that has, to some extent, legs. There are still a few people who celebrate it. Good for them. I do not personally. I did my time on that in the ’70s and ’80s. Jerry Stiller made it fun. The real thing was terrifying, obviously, and you understood why George was not in favor of it. But he made it fun, and it was Jeff Schaffer’s joke—the idea to give it a pole. That was not the case. The real symbology of it was more peculiar and not as wholesome as an aluminum pole with a good strength-to-weight ratio.

I need to share a bit of context here.. many are going to say that it is not appropriate for Juan to get mad at Nino David Nino Rodriguez .. but on this count it was a very calculated rant. People have talked about him moving the "bar" like in a football game constantly. When in fact it is NOT UP TO HIM. It is a reaction to people saying things are not moving "fast enough" by the Trump Administration. TIMING IS EVERYTHING. NOT YOUR CHOICE. ENJOY THE SHOW. NCSWIC. NOTHING. This time YT didn't take it down! We are in Control.

Tested this concepting workflow. ▶️ Converting a level design image to a 3D asset gallery image ▶️ re-generating segmented subjects into separate high quality images. ▶️ using these images to generate the 3D meshes. First time using 'for loops' in ComfyUI, works great and the prompts are updated for every segment. I used the Nano Banana 2 API node in ComfyUI to generate the final high quality images. Those SAM3 nodes are crazy btw, just set some points and it creates a mask! For the 3D model generation I used the new Tripo Smart Mesh tool, which is fast! The output is not perfect yet. I think in a lot of cases not production ready right now but that depends on the input image and the goal as well. For pre-production / concepting phase it's perfect and for far distance meshes it’s fine. I’m sure these tools keep improving, curious what we can work with in 3-6 months. Minimal cleanup and scaling in Blender and tested the meshes in UEFN / Unreal Engine. After creating the ComfyUI workflow it took less than an hour to do everything.
