Mayor of Miami, FL, Eileen Higgins called the federal immigration enforcement in her community “inhumane” and “cruel.” “Obviously, we're going to comply with the law, but we are not going to help beyond that, because in my community in South Florida, we are the most affected,” Higgins, a Democrat, said. She added that the looming potential expiration of Temporary Protected Status for Haitians and Venezuelans in the U.S. could have a harmful impact on Miami, saying “our economy is at stake and our humanity is at stake.”

Here’s four and a half minutes of Charlie having a respectful dialogue with a black woman who’s likewise respectful to him but has a different viewpoint of “systemic racism” in modern-day America. Charlie engages her with the utmost redirect and dignity and even defends her from some folks in the crowd a few times. Charlie wasn’t racist. He wasn’t anti-black. He simply had a different view of race relations in 2025 America and who’s responsibility it is to fix the black American community, and he also NEVER viewed black people as a whole as a victim class. That might be offensive to some, but it’s certainly doesn’t equate to hate and bigotry. It’s a mere difference of opinion. A racist would’ve let the crowd go at her. A man who believed all black women didn’t have adequate brain processing power to be taken seriously wouldn’t engage respectfully back and forth like this.

And so I've rolled out a plan in consultation with a lot of community leaders to figure out what we can do to address this crisis. And that's ensuring that every new mother, including every Black mother, has access to prenatal care and paid family leave so that after they give birth they can tend to their own health and the health of their child. There's so much that we could do at the federal level to save the lives of Black mothers all across the state. Another issue that I think impacts Black Texans particularly is voting rights and gerrymandering — probably the biggest attack on Black political power since Jim Crow. They are systematically diluting the voting power of Black and brown Texans. And so these two issues in particular I think need a lot of spotlight.
