I had no idea how wild the story of human evolution was before chatting with the geneticist of ancient DNA David Reich. Human history has been again and again a story of one group figuring ‘something’ out, and then basically wiping everyone else out. From the tribe of 1k-10k modern humans 70,000 years ago who killed off all the other human species; to the Yamnaya horse nomads 5,000 years ago who killed off 90+% of (then) Europeans and also destroyed the Indus Valley Civilization. So much of what we thought we knew about human history is turning out to be wrong, from the ‘Out of Africa’ theory to the evolution of language, and this is all thanks to the research from David Reich’s lab. Here is a video that challenges our understanding of human intelligence and progress. Judging by the ancient images, it seems that we are not so unique when it comes to technology. The poses of people reminiscent of using tablets and the drawings depicting car-like vehicles and aeroplanes suggest that all this existed in the past? We may not be the first to have achieved such technological progress. What if other civilisations had already travelled the same path of development and thinking that we are going through now? It is very likely that we are just a repeated link in an infinite chain. History, as we know, is often rewritten and we only have fragments of knowledge of the past. Think about it, what if all that we consider our own achievement was actually the path of ancient knowledge and technology undertaken by someone else, which we are rediscovering for ourselves?😉

So our humanness, our empathy, sympathy, compassion, love, our cognitive abilities, the mirror neurons, all these kinds of things are because that one gene. Well, where this gets really interesting is where did chromosome 2 come from? And scientists have the answer, but they don’t like the answer because chromosome 2 is the product of a fusion. Proceedings from National Academy of Sciences. The volume Genetics says this very clearly. We conclude that the origin of human chromosome 2 is the product of an ancestral fusion of telomere to telomere. Fusion of two pre existing chromosomes. That does not happen in nature. It can’t happen in nature. So here’s what they’re saying. You got two fully formed, fully functional chromosomes, and on the end are the telomeres that protect those chromosomes when the cells divide. And that’s why they’re on the end, they take the hit. It’s a trauma in a cell when those chromosomes are pulled apart and some of the DNA doesn’t make it. So nature puts telomeres on the end to take the hit, so the good DNA remains intact, and that’s why it’s on the ends.
