The language of Anthropic's Claude AI constitution really makes me squirm, especially recognizing that the people writing it have access to the next version of Claude that we haven't seen yet. They are clearly speaking to it as if it's an entity, as if it's a person, as if it has consciousness, as if it has a will, as if it's another human being. Her take is valid. My introduction to Tarantino was Pulp Fiction and it seemed like he wrote himself in just to say the word in this cringe scene. Scorsese did the same thing in Taxi Driver, writing himself in as a character saying it. There was definitely an era of iconic filmmakers writing themselves in as characters in their movies saying the word— their personal motivations can certainly be questioned.

Morgan Housel will never use AI to write. To him, it defeats the whole purpose of writing. "The process of writing is what gets the author thinking. When they write a book, they didn't have all that knowledge in their head. They started out with one brave sentence, and then that taught them something. If you're using any kind of LLM to do any of the broad structure for you, you're not actually thinking. You stripped out everything that was good about writing." He'll use it for research, as a "Google on steroids." But even then he argues that the research process is different: "When you're doing the reps of research, it's gonna hit you in a different way."

The first journal I think I ever had, I was in 3rd grade, and it was one of those “composition books” with the black and white splotchy covers. I’ve always loved writing in a journal. A few things about this video: • You’d think the depth of a diaphragm will be in the size of a body but she is defying the norm. • She has zero flat notes even when out of breath, tonal projection is just one of her strengths and thats a talent not given to many. • The song writing in this video is so good I just remembered when music had lyricists that are linguistics instead of influencers. • SHE ONE OF ONE❤️

A Life Written in Words One of the first questions I asked him as we sat down was how many articles he has written over the years. It feels like Charles Onyango-Obbo, has been writing since the beginning of time. “At least 10,000,” he said, almost lightly. I am still trying to wrap my head around that number. Ten thousand pieces of thought. Ten thousand acts of discipline. Ten thousand moments of paying attention to the world and choosing to document it. That is not just writing. That is rhythm. That is commitment. That is the quiet endurance of someone who has chosen words as both craft and calling. It is also a lot of observing, reflecting, pausing, and thinking: the unseen labor behind every published piece. And beyond his own writing, he has helped shape journalism in East Africa and beyond, influencing how stories are told, how truth is pursued, and how public discourse evolves. He is a man of the word, a man of words, and a man of his word. What a delight it was to sit down with him for a Footprints podcast conversation. Listening to him trace the arcs of his life and career reminded me why we started this podcast in the first place: to sit at the feet of those who have walked long journeys and to gather the wisdom they have picked up along the way. Out here in the middle of the street, a grown man clearly not in control of himself while his young daughter just stands there watching it all unfold. Cars flying by, people recording, and this kid has to deal with her father acting like that in public. This is what happens when discipline disappears and people stop taking responsibility for their own lives. That little girl deserves a man she can look up to, not one she has to be embarrassed by.
