This is Michael Knowles calling Zionism a relatively new innovation that started out secular. “‘If you think that Israel has a right to exist, then you are a Zionist.’ But I don’t think that claim is exactly true…The traditional Christian perspective is that the New Testament is the fulfillment of the Old Testament, and the Church is the new Israel, the spiritual Israel, and so these kind of specific ethnic claims that come out of the Old Testament, they don’t really hold true…There is a kind of innovation that comes about in the 19th century focused on returning Jews specifically to the homeland…” Every time I think I start to have a grasp on the theological question of Israel, someone I respect and admire (like Michael) argues the opposite—and kind of effectively. I don’t think there is any one topic that currently confuses me more than this one, because people say literally opposite things—and all of them self-professed Christians.
