As someone with a Muslim background, I became curious to learn about the history of Jewish people to understand for what crime in the world they deserved to be burnt alive during WWII only to learn that it was for the crime of existence. In addition to being expelled, forced to live in ghetto and being second class citizens, I learned that WWII was one of the MANY instances in which the Jewish population was the target of large-scale hate that led to their mass killings. If Israel did not exist, if it was not for the power of Israel in the region, Jewish people would've been prosecuted and slaughtered to this day. While many wars and tragedies have been happening in the world, It's disgusting and ignorant to compare and equivalent anything with the genocide of Jewish people during WII. It's shameful to hear the same rhetoric that led to many many massacres against Jewish people today in 2023. I refuse to stay silent in the face of anti-Semitism.

Olivia Reingold: Abdul El-Sayed, who is Muslim, walks a fine line on the Jewish state. He told the crowd, “All of us love and revere Jewish folk, our Jewish neighbors, the faith of Judaism.” Later that night, I asked him whether he believes in Israel's right to exist as a Jewish state. Dr. Abdul El-Sayed: I'd love to take the question, actually. What do you mean by Jewish state? If you can't define the question, I'm not going to answer your question. Katie Halper: So, it's fascinating to me that “What does a Jewish state mean?” can be a gotcha question. Do you think most people would have a different opinion if they understood what the current Jewish state of Israel means? Dr. Abdul El-Sayed: I think most people have in their heart of hearts a commitment to foundational equity—that everybody deserves equal rights to peace, dignity, and self-determination. The reason I asked that question is because it's very difficult to square that question with equal rights for Palestinian people. Whether you're defining a Jewish state based on an actual state religion, which means that some people don't belong as much because they may not belong to the same faith. And then if you're doing it by identity, the question becomes, well, is it the identity of the leadership or is it the majority of the country? All of these become really, really difficult to square with any semblance of equal rights. If your interpretation of the identity of a state would then allow that state to discriminate against people for how they pray or because of their ethnicity, I don't think most of us would be okay with that. And I'll say that about any country. I don't believe in ethno-states, I just don't. I believe in the equal human dignity of all people. I'm grateful that I live in the United States of America where there is no state religion, no state language, and no state identity. And I don't believe that people should be allowed to discriminate against one another or that we should have whole power structures based on who people are.

What happened last night at Park East Synagogue is horrifying. This was not a protest. This wasn’t about policy, and this was not about Israel. This was a mob of people openly targeting Jews, a mob that gathered outside a synagogue, chanting, threatening and intimidating a religious community for being Jewish. Hours earlier, I had been inside that very building meeting with community members, and now police had to form a barrier around the house of worship in the United States to protect Jews from violence. This is the same pattern that we saw in Europe in the 1930s, mobs outside synagogues, demonization, collective blame, and now law enforcement forced into the role of physical protectors of Jewish life. You do not surround a synagogue if your issue is foreign policy. You do that when your goal is to terrorize Jews. This is bloodthirsty, hate-driven fanaticism, and it has absolutely no place here in the United States. The police must get this under control, and our leaders must call it out for what it is. This is anti-Jewish persecution. Get these people out of the country and designate the Muslim brotherhood now.

The State of Israel and its actions do not represent Judaism, the Jewish people, or the Torah. From the very beginning, authentic rabbis opposed the creation of the State of Israel. According to Judaism, Jews are forbidden to establish a sovereign state, rebel against nations, or wage wars. Judaism is a religion, not power or domination. Violence, oppression, war, and bloodshed are rejected by authentic Jewish teachings. Judaism forbids murder, aggression, and wars. The Torah does not permit Jews to occupy land by force or rule over others. Jews are commanded to live peacefully with their neighbors. The world increasingly recognizes that Israel is not a Jewish state and does not represent Judaism. As even the U.S. Vice President has stated: “Anti-Israel is not anti-Semitism.” The Israeli government oppresses religious Jews in the Holy Land. It is attempting to force religious Jewish youth into the Israeli army—an army forbidden by Jewish law. This is a direct assault on religious freedom. The goal is clear: to force all Jews to become Zionists and fight their wars. Anti-Zionist religious communities are pressured, threatened, and brutalized to make them abandon their beliefs. Those who refuse military service face arrests, beatings, and severe violence. These realities prove once again that the State of Israel and its leaders do not represent Judaism or the Jewish people. Hundreds of thousands of religious Jews are struggling to preserve their faith and basic human rights. Their only wish is to live at peace with their neighbors, as required by their religion, serve G-d and continue with their daily lives. The founders of the State of Israel were outspoken opponents of Judaism who attempted to erase it from Jewish life. Today’s leadership continues this path by persecuting Jews who refuse to violate the Torah. Benjamin Netanyahu is not a Jewish leader. He does not speak in the name of the Jewish people, and he does not speak in the name of the Holy Torah.

The State of Israel and its actions do not represent Judaism, the Jewish people, or the Torah. From the very beginning, authentic rabbis opposed the creation of the State of Israel. According to Judaism, Jews are forbidden to establish a sovereign state, rebel against nations, or wage wars. Judaism is a religion, not power or domination. Violence, oppression, war, and bloodshed are rejected by authentic Jewish teachings. Judaism forbids murder, aggression, and wars. The Torah does not permit Jews to occupy land by force or rule over others. Jews are commanded to live peacefully with their neighbors. The world increasingly recognizes that Israel is not a Jewish state and does not represent Judaism. As even the U.S. Vice President has stated: “Anti-Israel is not anti-Semitism.” The Israeli government oppresses religious Jews in the Holy Land. It is attempting to force religious Jewish youth into the Israeli army—an army forbidden by Jewish law. This is a direct assault on religious freedom. The goal is clear: to force all Jews to become Zionists and fight their wars. Anti-Zionist religious communities are pressured, threatened, and brutalized to make them abandon their beliefs. Those who refuse military service face arrests, beatings, and severe violence. These realities prove once again that the State of Israel and its leaders do not represent Judaism or the Jewish people. 🚨 The enemies of peace hate to see Muslim–Jewish relations reconciled. To my pro-Israel and American friends: we must stand firmly against radical extremists such as Muslim Brotherhood aligned terrorists but we must not conflate them with Muslims as a whole. I am an Arab Muslim and a proud friend of the Jewish people and the State of Israel. I want to see more Muslims become friends of Israel and actively work toward reconciling Muslim–Jewish relations. When all Muslims are lumped together with extremists, it only leads to isolation, and that is exactly what extremists want. It is better for humanity that Muslims, Jews, and Christians reconcile, cooperate, and build a thriving, peaceful Middle East together. Do not give extremists what they want. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
