#Michigan HC Kyle Whittingham on his comments about not hating Ohio State from Big Ten media days: “Do we have a better chance of winning if I hated them? I don’t understand. Whatever gives us the best chance to win, I’m all for it. I want to beat them... show more

Just win the game and no one cares. Ryan Day approached the Michigan game last year like he does every other game and they won. Making a mountain out of a mole hill

This dude is over his head. Thinks he’s playing tiddly winks with the Mormons still.

I fear he doesn’t understand it. Maybe he can get there

As an alumni and a guy, who’s never lost to Ohio State and played the significant role in beating them it wasn’t about hating them. We just beat them. We believed in our Michigan brothers enough we never had to focus on them We just beat the brakes off of them.

I remember when Michigan took this game seriously

1. Don’t give your rival bulletin board material 2. Don’t create distractions for your guys - keep them focused on what’s in front of them 3. Play disciplined football Crazy ideas, I know

I just want to give my thanks to michigan for hiring this guy

KW knows what he's talking about. In fact, the team that wins is usually the one that can control their emotions and stay disciplined. Fans can hate Ohio because that has no bearing on the outcome of the game. But I think too many fans project that onto the mindset of the team

He’s just not getting it. Someone needs to pull him to the side and remind him what this Rivalry means

"HateGate" is the most offseason controversy of all-time. 😂

Can we move on from this talking point. Who actually cares? Gate doesn’t win the game. Prepping and executing does.

How has no one pulled him aside and told him the party line? What does Warde Manuel actually do here?

Y'all will learn just what a petty man Kyle is… in a good way. He’s got Jordan levels of pettiness payback capability. No joke. Do not cross him. He beat BYU for a decade because fans harassed his wife on the field after a Holy War game.

Nice to see a coach thats been there and done that. Best way to beat a rival is with respect off the field and brutality on

Bo didn’t hate Ohio State. He coached there and got a degree from OSU. Lloyd didn’t hate them either. They both simply respected OSU.

Pretty eye opening how childish these fan bases are. It’s not that deep, the fans can hate each other all they want. Let him coach.

Yall want him to beat his chest and yell “Fuck Ohio” all day smh I don’t want no bullshit woof tickets.. if he’s preparing with segments of practice dedicated for Nov 28 then that’s enough.. just win the damn game!

UM clearly doesn’t deserve Whitt with these asinine comments. Call up Biff, Sherrone, Hoke, Rich Rod and the boys. See which hater is available. Obviously this is what Mich wants more than winning.

I think people are reading to much into this. I feel like Ohio State put to much emphasis on the Michigan game in 2024 and played there worst game of the season because of it. Let your play do the talking. You don’t want to overlook any game on your schedule.

“I don’t understand”. No, no he doesn’t. Yes, hate has literally fueled wins in this rivalry. That said, this kind of backlash is exactly what it takes for him to understand.

@CBSSportsCFB Kyle Whittingham is not faking performative hatred. He’s simply a good football coach. Michigan is in good hands I fear. 😂

Yeah he better beat ohio state. These comments will be used horribly

It’s late in the day. He’s sundowning.

People acting like he’s new to college football. He’s not Harbaugh. He’s not gonna act like yall want him to. Outside of the recent run, every coach said we hate them and will beat them. But usually didn’t. Let’s see what happens first.

I just don’t understand your comments considering your mentor and best friend Urban Meyer vehemently hated Michigan I don’t expect you to understand this rivalry and your legacy will be defined by that one game Something you never had to say before

He didn't go to Michigan to beat Ohio State. He went there to win a national title.

Gosh darn folks I just dawg gone can't get the hate in my heart. - Head Ball Coach at Michigan (football team)

As an Ohio State fan I'll say I don't have an issue with what he is saying. I love to beat Michigan and hate to lose to them, but I have many friends that are UM fans and I don't personally hate them for it, makes the rivalry more fun actually.

focusing on being the best football team possible is the best way to beat ohio state

This is a non story we gotta stop

You hired a guy from Utah not sure what Michigan fans expected

I don't know what happens in November, but I do know he's a devout Mormon and you're not going to get them on camera saying something about "hate". From what his former players say though, he does "get it". So I'm cautiously optimistic.
