Michigan’s been extra windy lately—but that doesn’t mean we’re getting more power from the turbines across the state. Reminder - Scotland’s wind turbines have been secretly using fossil fuels Scotland’s power sector is being criticized after it was revealed that dozens of giant turbines have been using diesel generators. The information came from a whistleblower who says the environmental-friendly windmills were only turning thanks to fossil fuels. The revelation is now fueling environmental, health and safety concerns, especially since the diesel generated turbines were running for up to six hours a day. Scottish Power said the company was forced to hook up 71 windmills to the fossil fuel supply after a fault on its grid. The move was an attempt to keep the turbines warm and working during the cold month of December. South Scotland Labor MSP Colin Smyth said regardless of the reasons, using diesel to deice faulty turbines is “environmental madness.” Source: Straight Arrow News

Wind turbines are getting bigger, more efficient, and are delivering higher output. That sounds impressive, but it isn't compared to other sources. A single nuclear plant, for example, produces around 1,750 megawatts. To match that, you need roughly 150 large turbines. Wind uses over 100X more land than nuclear for the same output. And turbines, of course, only produce power when the wind is blowing. Nuclear is constant. Then there's the storage requirements. To make wind reliable, you need batteries. At grid scale, that becomes impossible with current technologies. Wind power remains an expensive pipe dream, lining the pockets of a few at the expense of the many.

Albanese is a disgraceful liar. The concern about whales and offshore wind turbines has nothing to do with a whales ability to “steer around” wind turbines as Albanese is trying to argue. The wind turbines proposed off the NSW coast are floating wind turbines anchored to the seabed with mooring cables. And when you put 300 turbines in confined area you create a labyrinth of mooring cables and electrical cables which presents a risk of both "secondary" and "tertiary" entanglement for whales. “Secondary” entanglement is presumed to be the main entanglement-related concern when marine debris like lost fishing gear became ensnared around mooring lines and/or cables, and subsequently entangled marine wildlife. To group 300 giant offshore floating wind turbines in the middle of a whale migration zone is reckless environmental vandalism. Albanese was deceiving the Australian public, and Dutton wasn’t across his brief to call him out. Why does the turbine stop responding to stronger flow in the high-speed case when your natural instinct would expect it to keep speeding up? At that point, the blades are mostly interacting with the disturbed wake they created themselves. So, torque from different regions start cancelling and flipping in sign. The system hits a saturated balance. More inflow doesn't mean more net rotation, just more turbulence around the equilibrium. If you don't believe me take it up with: Wind Energy Explained (Manwell, McGowan & Rogers, 2010) or Aerodynamics of Wind Turbines (Hansen, 2008).

Coal is restarted, gas plants carry the bulk of the load and supply warnings are issued. This is the reality few in elected office seem to grasp. When the weather calms, which it regularly does, wind power disappears from the grid. Britain only stays online thanks to dispatchable energy systems picking up the slack. The country would be better off, both financially and in terms of energy security, if it simply ran off dispatchable power in the first place.

I’m the only developer of data centers on earth that graduated from environmental studies. I'm pretty aware of what these concerns are. They are around air, water use, heat, noise pollution. So sustainability is at the heart of what we do in terms of all these proposals. We search for the best technology. There's many air-cooled turbines now, so you're blending in air-cooled versus water. There's so many different ways to generate power. We can also put a percentage of the power generation through solar, wind, and batteries because the battery technology is 10X more efficient than it was just five years ago. So that's very helpful because it makes the cost of energy lower.
