The road to Taptapani is one of the most scenic drives in Odisha, about 55 km from Brahmapur. Madam President travelled on this route today to visit the revered Maa Kandhuni Devi Temple in the Eastern Ghats. Surrounded by lush hills and known for its natural hot springs, Taptapani is a perfect blend of nature and spirituality.

On this World Tiger Day, here is a remarkable story from Odisha! A tiger that chose to live with humans instead of the wild - that was Khairi, the legendary tigress of Similipal. Found as an orphaned cub near the Khairi River in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj on 5 Oct 1974, she was taken in by legendary forest officer Saroj Raj Choudhury(the founding Field Director of Similipal Tiger Reserve), and his wife Nihar Nalini Swain, who adopted her out of concern for the cub’s safety. Khairi grew up alongside dogs, a bear, a hyena and even a crocodile. Every attempt to release her back into the wild failed - she always returned home. Her extraordinary life also helped Saroj Choudhury conduct pioneering research on tiger behaviour. Khairi died tragically in 1981 after contracting rabies, but her story remains one of India’s most remarkable tales of wildlife conservation and the extraordinary bond between humans and a tiger. A legend of Similipal. A pride of Odisha & India. ❤️ #TigerDay #internationalTigerDay #WorldTigerDay
