I attended trade school and was involved in welding, electrical, carpentry and other farm mechanics while still in high school. After working as a machine operator, heavy equipment operator and millwright in the logging industry, I joined the union electrical apprenticeship program. After work dropped off in my area in the ‘80s I went to work for an international corporation installing, maintaining and repairing expensive equipment while making a 6 figure salary with exceptional benefits until taking an early retirement. Never stop learning, training and making yourself more valuable in whatever career you choose.

The schools also need to be held accountable. They force unnecessary over priced courses for financial gain. An 18 year old knucklehead without a job would not be able to finance a $70K car for a reason.

If the amount of young people that won’t even go out to pick up their own food is any indicator of their willingness to work it’s game over.

I made my living as a hands-on, electronics technician for the Dept of Defense & helped to develop new electronics (as a bench tech) for the Space Shuttle, and then worked for many years as a field service tech for financial equipment and bio-medical equipment. I loved it!

Absolute truth. Make Mike the Secretary of Education, and allow him to invigorate, and reinforce education for the betterment of our youth, and the country!

Can't stress this enough to this younger generation. I flat out told my daughter she will not attend a university but I would pay for a trade school. This will be the 5th video I'm sending to her on this matter and the 2nd one from Mike. Thanks for sharing 💫

Where the fuck exactly are all of these six figure jobs? Maybe if you OWN the HVAC company, or plumbing company etc, but you sure as fuck aren’t seeing that if you just work there. As a welder, I’ve put welds in SPACE , and I ain’t getting 6 figures. I haven’t seen much in 20 yrs

I have 2 sons, 17 and 13 and a 16 yr old daughter, and all 3 of them are going into the trades. My 17 yr old is currently roofing and interested in all different types of trades. My 13 yr old wants to be a welder and my daughter wants to be a builder. I’m teaching my kids right!

There are NO trade jobs for American citizens here in Saint Cloud Florida because it's OVERRUN with illegal aliens and Kissimmee too 🙄

Positions available does not mean positions hiring... This is the way they can skew statistics and lie to the public... They are not really hiring for these jobs, especially with no experience. Maybe if you have tenure you'll get a shot, but definitely not green.

He's Right, 100%. I'm a carpenter/craftsman/electrician/shade tree mechanic/EMT trained/Certified AUTOCad Draftsman/2 militaries. your basic MacGyver. No brage, just fact. I'm 70 years old and My schooling was when they taught the 3 r's. I would consider the military as My trade school. If I need money the first 3 are my go to's I rely on and could be working tomorrow. I've only taken college classes, all trade related. I had to shut down My small business 10 years ago bc of lack of skilled help. Finding someone that knew what end of a hammer to use to drive a nail was getting harder. And when I had to start turning away good paying customers and new jobs, I retired. Trade school or military is the way to go right now. WE ARE NEEDED! Look around, everything You see is going to break down, need replaced, require maintenance at some point in time. If you have a skill You have a job.

The best way IMHO to get the next generation enthused about working is by making home ownership more accessible. It's the tempering of expectations though that has got to happen first. They want the top-of-the-line life from the get go&that level of expectation is a big problem.

He's right! I graduated from a trade High School and went right to work with the skills I had learned in 1975.

We love Mike Rowe! The public school system in our country MUST offer a variety of the various trades curriculum. Make it mandatory that a high school student must take two semesters of any trade in order to graduate. Establish partnership programs with contractors in the area.

Poor pay and benefits for skilled labor is what drove people away from pursuing those careers. Hazardous work environment, usually non climate controlled, pay don't meet the stress and labor demand. Dealerships charging $150 per hour while paying the techs $25. Cost of tools.

@VincentSco72192 Prime example of “bullshit”. We are in a scammy system. Reinvigorating the workforce at this point would only perpetuate the Congress and the Federal Reserve fucking us six ways to Sunday infinitely. Frankly @mikeroweworks should stfu, give the mic up bruh! 🤔

And stop bringing in foreign people to do the jobs. My family was in construction, but then illegal immigrants came & worked under the table, brought down wages, made it harder to compete to get jobs. Every time you turn around someone working on your house barely speaks English.

My husband paid a fortune (and I mean A LOT OF MONEY) to send my stepson to college so he could work at a movie theater. That wasn’t the plan, of course. At 31, he’s still at the same place he began working shortly after college. Yes, he got promoted a few times. He’s a very smart, very articulate guy. But he’s making little money, living with his mother to help pay her bills (she’s an unstable woman who needed an excuse to lure him back in). This is what we’re dealing with today. Very sad.

SPOT ON! Mike Rowe has always been a voice of reason, and the fruit he produces in his life shows this to be true.
