Mild sleep deprivation drives significant increases in hunger, but differentially in men versus women. It makes men release more pro-hunger signals. In women it inhibits satiety via reductions in GLP. This has key implications for how to counter it.

if short sleep lowers a woman's own GLP-1, that is the same axis the weight-loss drugs hit. so for women, a bad night and the medication are pulling the same lever in opposite directions. and almost all sleep advice is written as if everyone has the same physiology. men get a push from the hunger hormone, women lose the brake from GLP-1. same lost sleep, two different fixes. this is the kind of thing continuous data should actually model. sleep staging and appetite together, with sex as a variable, instead of one rule for everybody.

I wish I could sleep man. I haven’t slept a solid night through maybe twice in 10 years. Wish I was exaggerating. I’ve tried multiple things mentioned but I wake up 2-3 times a night. Maybe I’ll figure it out eventually. Thanks for all you do.

The therapeutic implication tracks the mechanism. If women lose satiety through blunted GLP-1, a protein- and viscous-fiber-forward first meal is the highest-leverage counter, since those are the strongest endogenous GLP-1 secretagogues. For men the lever sits more upstream: short sleep raises ghrelin and endocannabinoid (2-AG) tone, so defending slow-wave sleep itself beats trying to out-eat the drive. Same sleep debt, two different intervention targets.

Many people still treat sleep as the thing they do after finishing everything else. I used to think the same. But tracking recovery changed my perspective. Sleep is not the opposite of productivity. It is part of the system that creates it.

This was interesting to hear. As well as the cortisol changes which correlates with my own experiment using Eli. I have taken the different measurements and I see the same findings.

so bad sleep is basically working against the glp-1 drugs everyone’s on right now. rough.

Sleep is often overlooked, yet it plays an important role in appetite, energy, and daily food choices. Consistent sleep and a whole-food diet can work together to support lon-term wellness.

Sometimes bad sleep is because of unsettled issues in our lives. In love with someone that is gone or married to someone else maybe. Job issues. Financial. So important to improve these aspects of life to get to better health.

You cannot out-discipline a broken circadian rhythm. Bad sleep completely hijacks your hormonal blueprint before you even wake up. Prioritize rest to control your appetite💯

The sleep research always leads with hunger. Nobody runs the same study on decision quality under sleep debt. My worst calls as a CEO were never made because I lacked information. They were made after 5 nights averaging 5 hours. The hunger effect is visible. The judgment impairment is invisible until the damage is done. That's the one that costs you real money.

It disrupts the balance between ghrelin and leptin. When I'm sleep-deprived, I've noticed that I eat more, have stronger cravings for sweets, and also crave “easy dopamine”—like chips, movies, and eating out—especially fatty and salty foods.

The neuroendocrine divergence here is fascinating. Men: Active upregulation of orexigenic drive (ghrelin/orexin). Women: Passive downregulation of the satiety brake (GLP-1). This completely changes the pharmacological target for countering sleep-induced metabolic dysfunction.

Fascinating how sleep affects metabolism far beyond energy levels. Hunger is not just about willpower—it’s also about hormones, neurobiology and sleep quality. Correlation to GLP-1s?

Sleep debt hits men differently. More ghrelin, more drive to eat. And food is often an emotion regulation strategy anyway. So it's not just hunger. It's a dysregulated nervous system looking for relief. Protect your sleep first!!

Sex difference in hunger response tracks with body composition data. Men gain weight faster on 5-6 hour nights even at same calories, while women show more volatile appetite suppression. The mechanism matters because the fix isn't identical for both.

The alcohol piece deserves more airtime. A nightcap knocks you out fast and boosts early deep sleep, so it feels like it works. Then it suppresses REM and tanks HRV in the back half. You slept but didn't recover. Even one or two drinks shows up on a wearable.
