Michael Jackson's first question the morning after watching Prince perform with tells you everything about what happened that night. “Why was Prince playing the bass in my face?” Not “How was the show?” Not “Was Prince good?” Why was he playing the bass in my face? And suddenly this legendary meeting between two of the biggest musical personalities ever sounds less like pop history and more like two ridiculously talented people having the most bizarre sibling-style disagreement imaginable. had brought them together. Michael actually showed up to watch Prince perform. Then Prince walks offstage, gets right in Michael's face and starts aggressively playing bass at him. Of course Michael remembers THAT part. And tries to smooth it over by explaining that Prince was just being nice. Michael's response? No. Prince is a meanie. That exchange is incredible because neither man seems capable of experiencing the other normally. Michael sees Prince's outrageous performance and interprets it as personal. Prince apparently sees Michael sitting there and thinks, I'm going to play bass directly into this man's face. Two musical geniuses. Zero normal behavior.

Nas told this story on the "Drink Champs" podcast with N.O.R.E. while promoting "The Lost Tapes 2" in 2019‼️. Prince showed up at the release party for Nas’s 1999 album "I Am…"‼️. Nas approached him directly (“I pulled a N.O.R.E. move”) and said something like: “Yo, look man, let’s do this. Let’s do this song.”‼️ Prince’s reply: “Do you own your masters⁉️” Nas answered honestly that he didn’t‼️and that he was far from it, still owing the label (Columbia/Sony) about four or five more albums under his contract‼️. He recalled being blown away / “Damn.”‼️ Prince then said: “When you own your masters, give me a ring.”‼️ Nas has described it as Prince dropping a jewel that helped him “see the future.”‼️ They stayed cool afterward, kicked it a few times, and Prince even invited him onstage at one point‼️ (Nas said he was too nervous to go up)‼️.
