Let’s do the milk maths! Every elephant at our Nairobi or Kaluku Nursery drinks two bottles of specialist formula milk every three hours, day and night. That’s 16 bottles of milk daily per baby elephant. (Wamata, seen enjoying her bottle at the end, is one such Nursery baby!) Rather than gulping from the bottle like the others, she takes it slowly – the Keepers fill the very tip of her trunk with milk, so she can pour every drop carefully into her mouth at her own pace. How do our orphans spend their evenings? At our Nairobi and Kaluku Nurseries, each orphan returns to their own stable at dusk – a stable lined with freshly cut branches and browse. A Keeper sleeps on a raised platform inside the stable, within reach of the elephant's trunk - so should a trunk snake up reaching for comfort at any hour of night, they will always be rewarded. Milk is mixed fresh every three hours through the night and hand-delivered in two big bottles. Here, orphaned elephants take their next steps toward independence. With Muwingu in the lead, our Ithumba orphan herd is heading home for the evening. Everyone has a spring in their step knowing that bed and a fresh bottle of milk are waiting for them! Every elephant seen here is an orphan. Rescued as babies, they are now 5-7 years old and embarking on the rewilding phase at our Ithumba Reintegration Unit. Everything with elephants is gradual, and rewilding is no different. Kinyei and her friends will remain in our care until they have the confidence to go wild — a choice that is entirely their own. When our orphans return to the wild, how do they find a herd? Slowly. Reintegration isn't a single moment – it happens over years. At our Reintegration Units in Tsavo and Umani Springs, orphans grow steadily more independent, spending days and then nights away, until the wild becomes home. Even then, many still choose return to the place and people that raised them every now and again. Most don't go it alone. They join herds of ex-orphans who went wild before them, or form their own, made up of other ex-orphans they grew up with – the friendships made at the unit become the family they live wild with. As for who leads – matriarchy settles the way it does in any wild herd: through age, temperament, and the respect of the others. Kenderi is one of our older orphans, well on his way through weaning. His main diet is browse now, but milk feeds offer extra sustenance (and a moment of bonding with the Keepers he still relies on) as he continues to learn how to live wild.
