Milk dependency in the orphaned elephants doesn't end at three, or four, or even five. Losoito is five years old at our Voi Reintegration Unit and still on bottles – up to 24 litres of specially formulated milk a day, fed every three hours, day and night. Keeper Walter... has been with her for nearly every feed. Why? Well, bottles of milk serve several purposes beyond providing nutrients; they also offer comfort and time to bond with their caregivers. Despite being fortified, the formula we give can also never be considered a 100% perfect match. So we tend to find orphans remain milk dependent for longer than they might in the wild, taking advantage of the comfort bottles bring. This works to their benefit too, enabling a very gradual reintegration with plenty of time to learn the social and survival skills they need to thrive in the wild. How do our orphans spend their evenings? At our Nairobi and Kaluku Nurseries, each orphan returns to their own stable at dusk – a stable lined with freshly cut branches and browse. A Keeper sleeps on a raised platform inside the stable, within reach of the elephant's trunk - so should a trunk snake up reaching for comfort at any hour of night, they will always be rewarded. Milk is mixed fresh every three hours through the night and hand-delivered in two big bottles. At our Voi, Umani and Ithumba Reintegration Units, the orphans share larger, communal stockades and Keepers sleep nearby rather than inside. Here, orphaned elephants take their next steps toward independence. Each elephant develops at their own pace, as they build confidence and learn from each other, and passing wild herds, the skills they'll need for life in the wild. Since Eleanor's reintegration in the 1960s, Voi has witnessed countless success stories. Some orphans choose to venture far into the bush, others return regularly to these familiar stockades; taking a drink and reconnecting with their extended human family. He doesn't have to wait long until the next serving; every 3 hours, we hand-feed orphans of his age bottles of freshly mixed formula milk - day & night - to ensure their nutritional needs are met. By day, the herd roams as far as they choose as they learn to become wild. Come evening, the orphans spend the night in secure fenced stockades which offer protection from predators & allow those still milk-dependent to receive three-hourly milk feeds.

Over time, she’ll transition to hand-fed bottles of milk on a schedule – every three hours, day and night. Love isn't all about roses or grand gestures. At our Nursery in Kenya, it looks like a Keeper dragging a mattress onto the lawn so a sleepy (yet playful!) orphaned infant elephant can enjoy a rest. At our Reintegration Units in Tsavo and Umani Springs, orphans grow steadily more independent, spending days and then nights away, until the wild becomes home. Even then, many still choose return to the place and people that raised them every now and again. Most don't go it alone. They join herds of ex-orphans who went wild before them, or form their own, made up of other ex-orphans they grew up with – the friendships made at the unit become the family they live wild with. Suguta lives out in Tsavo with the same four friends she's had since the Nursery. As for who leads – matriarchy settles the way it does in any wild herd: through age, temperament, and the respect of the others. Herds aren’t one amorphous unit either, groups will splinter off and then rejoin, and these splinter herds will have their own mini-leaders. Kenderi is one of our older orphans, well on his way through weaning. His main diet is browse now, but milk feeds offer extra sustenance (and a moment of bonding with the Keepers he still relies on) as he continues to learn how to live wild.
