Why I say Japanese submarines are so dangerous and quieter than many nuclear submarines Conventional diesel-electric submarines are normally quieter than nuclear ones only at very low speeds, typically up to around 2-7 knots. Above that speed they quickly become noisy, while modern nuclear submarines can maintain excellent stealth up to about 20 knots. The British Astute-class, the Virginia Class and probably the French Suffren-class are said to remain among the quietest submarines in the world even at speeds close to 22-25 knots, behind only of the super quieter SeaWolf. So what does this have to do with Japanese submarines? The latest Japanese Subs represent such a leap in technology that they can stay extremely quiet up to 15 knots or more, a figure that gets remarkably close to modern nuclear submarines and is clearly superior to older nuclear classes. On top of that, these Japanese submarines are equipped with AIP and advanced lithium-ion batteries in the Taigei-class, allowing them to remain submerged for 15–20 days at low speed. When solid-state batteries enter service in the next generation, that endurance will practically double and this is scheduled to happen before 2030. Imagine how many daily patrols an adversary would need to track something that can disappear for weeks and need only few hours to recharge on surface. In regional scenarios (Indo-Pacific, East China Sea, Taiwan Strait), the Japanese strategy is perfectly suited, and maintenance costs are far lower than those of nuclear submarines. It is no coincidence that Israel has become a customer and ordered several of these boats. Submarines are a state of art for Japanese.

This is where I have to share my raw feelings about Rivian software currently on R1. The software experience they have created is good. It’s their own, with their software stack that they control. With that said, we have to stop making excuses for longstanding bugs. Like Quinn Nelson had posted about long ago, having to do multiple Resets, logins and out to get core functionality to work is not the experience we should be having. I know Rivian and Wassym do not want this. I also know they are working on R2 stuff as well. As a person who has spent real money on 4 Rivian’s with 3 R2 reservation between me and hubby, we are huge fans. Have helped many become Rivian owners as well. But the long outstanding bugs are starting to boil over. It’s dragging the software reliability down. Apple Music has been in Rivian vehicles for just about 2 years now. We are past the stage of it being “new”. Spatial Audio is a key music feature, and for me, and plenty of others, you have to turn that off sometimes just to get music to play. I shouldn’t have to do that. Plus, you can’t change that feature while the vehicle is in drive. So then you have to pull over and fiddle with it just to get it work and sometimes it doesn’t. Rivian assistant can’t do it either. Among other issues, like HVAC preconditioning, unstable cabin temps, GPS locking issues, profile switching not getting right or switching profile after the driver has gotten in, mobile app live activities not functioning properly, and more. The live activities is important, because we don’t have a notification for charging start stop/complete except for charging complete on DCFC, so on a level 2 charger, I don’t know if there is an issue with charging if the live activities don’t appear. Same for HVAC if it’s not showing up I have to keep opening the app to check to see what the temperature is. If you aren’t going to push me a notification that the cabin is at the temp I selected in favor of the live activities, then the live activities has to work. I could go on, but I really love my Rivian. I love the brand, I love what they want to do. And I think R2 is going to change the market for most things, but I want their focus to be on software and stability. Focus on polish, focus on features that many people want, don’t over complicate those things. Example, valet mode should be here by now that locks down speed acceleration and access to certain parts of the vehicle. Basic Pin to drive, not the multi factors drive one that depends on your phone and vehicle having an internet connection. Speedy, clean, stable software is always a win. I know Wassym Bensaid and plenty of others at Rivian can do this. We have seen it before and seen what they can do. The YouTube app is by far the best app they have added. I haven’t had any issues with it. It’s responsive, and works. Everything needs to work like that across the board. Please guy let me help in anyway I can, I just want the best for you and the community and customers. Let’s focus on that. I know some will see this as a complete complaining post but it’s not. It’s a plead to make the experience better for everyone and making the Rivian software the best software it can be.

Dominion Voting Machines can secretly alter your Ballot AFTER you've cast it. Princeton Prof. Andrew Appel exposes the jaw-dropping truth on the ImageCast Evolution machine. This "hybrid" beast scans your vote but has the sneaky power to print extra marks without you ever knowing. What's even more alarming is that they even programmed it to NOT fill in the bubble neatly so it would mimic a human being filling in a bubble not to rise suspicion and disguise the fact that a machine marked Ballot and not a human. This feature is available on Dominion voting machines, particularly models like the ImageCast Evolution (ICE) and ImageCast X (ICX), which have been used in various U.S. elections. The ICE can physically print additional votes onto a paper ballot after the voter inserts it for scanning and after they've reviewed it, if the machine is compromised by malware. This flaw stems from the machine's hybrid scanner/printer design, making it possible for hacked software to add or change votes undetected by the voter. Hackers could exploit security weaknesses in the machine or the connected election management system (EMS) to install malicious software. For the ICX, this includes an arbitrary-code-execution flaw that allows malware to propagate from the central EMS to all machines in a jurisdiction without needing physical access to each one. In models like the ImageCast Precinct (ICP) and ICE, a weak PRNG can reveal the order in which ballots were cast, potentially deanonymizing voters and linking ballots to individuals in scenarios where public ballot data is available. CISA identified nine vulnerabilities in certain ICX versions, including issues with authentication, encryption, and file validation. Exploiting these typically requires physical access to devices, EMS, or the ability to modify files before upload, but they could allow tampering if access is gained. In some configurations, like Georgia's ICX, attackers could alter QR codes on printed ballots to change encoded votes, though this would be detectable via risk-limiting audits (RLAs) since the human-readable text remains authoritative. Issues like those in Puerto Rico's 2024 primaries, where Dominion software produced lower or reversed vote totals compared to paper ballots, highlight potential for misconfigured systems to cause tabulation errors. The ICX includes extra Android apps, such as a terminal emulator providing root access, which could bypass controls and increase attack surfaces if exploited. This can also potentially make it able to be controlled remotely from anywhere. The truth is, all machines must go. Paper ballots and hand counts with massive oversight is the only safe way.

The Strategic Response Plan shows the LA FD working with public relations consultants to mitigate concern about how the Palisades Fire after-action report could impact the reputation of the mayor and the fire department. The memo saying, quote, it's our goal to prepare and protect Mayor Bass, the city, and the LAFD from reputational harm associated with the upcoming public release of its after-action report through a comprehensive strategy that includes risk assessment, proactive and reactive communications, and crisis response. The memo goes on to detail how the department wanted to have pre-release meetings with the LAFD Fire Commission and certain council members to, quote, minimize tough Q&A and Secure Alliance ahead of the City Council public meeting. — The fire department hired this consultant”

Garage Warfare at Sea: Lessons from Ukraine for the Pacific In a potential Pacific conflict, one near-certain outcome will be the neutralization of major shipyards. This differs from World War II precisely because long-range precision weapons like those of today did not exist back then. Large shipyards will be heavily targeted by missiles, leaving only smaller, less visible facilities operational to repair smaller vessels. The ability to conduct major repairs on large warships will be lost early in the conflict, that’s my prediction. In 2022 and 2023, much of the media and analyst attention focused on the industrial capacities of Russia and Ukraine. I published several reports on the subject at the time. After Russia intensively bombed Ukrainian industry throughout 2023 and into 2024, Ukraine effectively lost most of its industrial base, retaining only small workshops and a few underground facilities with minimal capacity beyond basic repairs. This fueled the explosive growth of the drone industry, which expanded relentlessly in garages and small shops, evolving into over 500 companies today producing everything from motors to software. There was no shortage of targets, with Russia deploying thousands of vehicles on the front lines. I foresee the same dynamic in a Pacific conflict: without major shipyards for large repairs or new construction, decentralized production of USVs, UAVs, and UUVs will surge in small boatyards and facilities with pier access. Just as land targets were plentiful in Ukraine, maritime targets will be abundant at sea. Future one-way UUVs, USVs, or even UAVs will be lighter than today’s thanks to solid-state batteries weighing roughly one-third less, while CL-20-based explosives will significantly increase tandem warhead power, allowing strikes on critical parts of targets. Hundreds or thousands of a variety of unmanned systems could be produced weekly across dozens or hundreds of small maritime workshops, a natural, organic process, exactly as we witnessed in Ukraine. The success or failure of this model will hinge on maintaining supply chains for this network of small producers. Assuming that large warships and major shipyards will remain operational in a high-intensity missile conflict in the Pacific is, in my view, overly optimistic. It’s time to start thinking seriously about how to fight a war with few ships and against thousands of unmanned threats.
