Big dawg El Niño coming this summer and fall! This is a bit science-y… but easy I promise. So follow along. You are looking at a vertical cross section of the tropical Pacific Ocean at the Equator with depth downward deep into the ocean. Left side is west near Asia. Right side is east near South America. It’s where we measure El Niño, the king control knob of the climate. One main way we know it’s coming is “subsurface heat”. See the dark red shades moving east under the surface and rising upward? That’s the El Niño developing! El Niño is a build up of hotter than normal water on the surface Eastern Tropical Pacific Ocean. What’s cool (or hot) is that the water comes from the West Tropical Pacific. During cool La Niña years it’s like a piggy bank. The West Pacific hoards and stores the heat near Asia. Then every couple-few years that warm water sloshes back East. It first appears under the surface where we measure it. It surfaces in late spring and El Niño grows in Summer to fall. You can tell by the magnitude of warm subsurface water that this looks like a biggie! So how will it impact us? For one, it typically subdues Atlantic hurricane season. That doesn’t mean no storms - just less active than it would have otherwise been. Also it releases lots of Heat… so it super charges heat waves around the planet and floods too - it all tends to be more immense and intense. And you can bet Earth will experience its hottest days on record coming later 2026 into 2027. El Niño is one of the biggest climate forces on Earth and it has a profound impact on world-wide weather because of all the heat released into the atmosphere from the ocean.

🌎 NOAA has officially declared the onset of El Niño El Niño is the warm phase of ENSO, during which surface waters in the central and eastern tropical Pacific become warmer than usual. As the distribution of warm water in the Pacific shifts, atmospheric circulation also changes, including the position of the jet stream and storm tracks. It’s unreal to see this El Niño continue to astonish. Take a look at the subsurface heat build up in the last few frames of this. The anomalies are backing up, and heating up, like a traffic jam, in the Central Pacific. There’s a ton more fuel left in this tank! Super El Niño has finally forced the big octopus to come to the surface! Look at the winds and the convective claws over the North Indian Ocean and India! Monsoon convection is now strong enough to snatch some moisture from the east despite the octopus trying to grab all of it. Kanpur has been getting good rain this morning! Another clear example of how firing up heat sources can change the supply and demand equation. Maybe Mother Nature also follows economic theory. Can we artificially fire up the demand to pull in the supply? Considering the warming in the neighborhood, global warming may not be as important as warming patterns and the associated responses (typhoons) for the monsoon and heatwaves. Pre-monsoon has many signatures of the warming patterns in terms of the wind shifts and heatwaves. Tuesday, April 14, 2026 at 6:52 AM: What you have witnessed yesterday and this past weekend across California and parts of Southern California is the birth pains of an El Niño development and the ongoing escalation the warming of the Pacific torrential rains came through the San Fernando Valley with such strong, thunderstorms that it caused significant flooding in the Sherman Oaks, Universal City area around 1:05 PM - 1:35 PM yesterday on April 13, 2026. Tuesday, April 14, 2026 at 6:52 AM: What you have witnessed yesterday and this past weekend across California and parts of Southern California is the birth pains of an El Niño development and the ongoing escalation the warming of the Pacific torrential rains came through the San Fernando Valley with such strong, thunderstorms that it caused significant flooding in the Sherman Oaks, Universal City area around 1:05 PM - 1:35 PM yesterday on April 13, 2026. Building gigawatt scale datacenters in the oceans may be even easier than I had previously thought. Normally for OTEC cold deep sea water and warm surface waters are needed. Because that gigawatt is generating a lot of heat as an end product of compute, along with some additional solar thermal collection, we won’t need warm surface water at all, allowing these datacenters to go almost anywhere with enough depth. Additionally, that gigawatt of heat may be hotter than surface seawater normally used for OTEC, allowing for much shallower piping (200m instead of 1000m) while also being more efficient. The availability of unlimited cold water for the condenser is the key factor we can’t replicate on land. This brings the potential energy generation for ocean based compute up from 10 terawatts to potentially thousands of terawatts, as the locations are not limited to areas with the warmest surface waters. The excess energy needed for hundreds or thousands of people to also live on these structures is minimal compared to that needed for compute.

As we enter July, models anticipate the Atlantic to remain generally quiet hurricane-wise. El Niño is dominating the current and forecast conditions in the tropical Atlantic, manifesting as high shear in the Caribbean and less thunderstorm activity than normal. By contrast, the eastern Pacific is expected to spring to life, supported by the El Niño background state. Watch the continuous cyclone activity (orange blobs) in this 35-day GEFS forecast, versus the rather docile Atlantic. We can't guarantee no Atlantic storms in July, especially with the always-present risk of so-called "home grown" development along old cold fronts that drape across the SW Atlantic and Gulf region. But things seem likely to stay in check for a while.

Rime builds up in the direction of the wind and is more like accumulated freezing dew rather than thick frost.⁣
