Nick Lane thinks that half of the 20 billion Earth-like planets in the Milky Way will spontaneously generate early organics like nucleotides and amino acids. Because the chemistry which leads to their formation is so favored. But then where are all the aliens? The bottleneck to complex life, in his view, are eukaryotes. All the complex life you see around you is made of eukaryotic cells. Eukaryotic cells are typically 1000x bigger in volume and genome size. The key advantage eukaryotes have is that the mitochondrial genome is distinct from the nuclear genome. Respiration requires the relevant genes to be right there on site. For bacteria, respiration happens on the cell surface. If a bacterial cell were to expand, it would need to copy its entire genome across the entire membrane many, many times over. If a eukaryotic cell wants to get bigger, it just needs more mitochondria, which means it only needs to copy the mitochondrial genome (much much smaller than the full nuclear genome). I found it a bit hard to believe that over the hundreds of millions of planets in the Milky Way which apparently have early life, none of them found a way to scale respiration. I woke up today excited. I’m outside of Poltava, and I feel amazing. My 50 km mark today is on the other side of Poltava, out of the city, which means Poltava is 100% doable. And I cannot explain how excited I am to see stores. To know that, for at least one day, I’ll have easy access to water. To know that every kilometer is taking me closer to Kharkiv Oblast, and closer to the end of this journey. We are now just $562 away from our $50,000 goal. That feels incredible. We’ve had a lot of losses over the course of this journey, and you are making it possible for us to replace some of that equipment. In the nonprofit world, we call this “earmarked” money. Every single dollar of that $50,000 already has a purpose. I have a list of equipment that needs to be replaced, things my soldiers need, and things we have lost along the way. And I have another list. A list of names that keeps growing while I walk this walk. The names of boys who didn’t get to see me finish this story. Boys who have now been added to the long list of soldiers I walk in honour of. That is the part of this journey that is much harder to put into words. I MADE THE BEST 2D SPRITE AI PIPELINE EVER! After testing so much, doing tons of math, trying various different methods I finally got truly the cleanest sprite result I could ask for! You should bookmark this post! ✅ I think this is the happiest 'aha' moment I've had since starting this journey. Day 48 of making a custom webGL game engine using Cursor 🔽🔽🔽 I've been trying to solve sprites since I started this project. I came close a couple of times but it was always something - either dynamic lights wouldn't work, or the genAI results would make them grainy, or I would have to have incorrect alpha etc. After so much struggling, wanting to give up, thinking it's impossible - it was finally done! Perfect matte interpolation of black & white backgrounds resulting in a clean outline of the sprite, half transparent effects keeping their full quality. But this was not enough for me. I wanted more. I wanted those dynamic lights for the most badass anime effects that I'll be creating for the next many weeks! And somehow, I managed to come up with the perfect balance that is nice to the eye with almost no visible imperfections or artifacts when using any kind of dynamic lights. See for yourself! 🔽🔽🔽 How does this magic happen? 1⃣ First, the animation is created using Kling AI. I found it the best to keep the quality anime 2D style I wanted, but I guess others may work as well. 2⃣ Then, the frames are carefully extracted at lossless quality and processed via automation through Nano Banana pass to create an opposite background (white->black or black->white). 3⃣ Once we have a proper spritesheet, I then used MiDaS to compute the depth maps, and then algorithmically create PBR maps for lighting. The remaining depth maps can also be used for various effects, although haven't explored it much yet. 4⃣ Finally, all elements are cut into single frames and overlapped with their respective normal maps. If done right, they're pretty much ready for runtime. I like my heroes to be 512 to truly stand out like fighting game characters, but all of this works with far smaller or bigger sprites. Mind you, it's important to note that Nano Banana has a max output of 4k. Therefore you don't want to make your atlases larger than 4k - which is still quite a lot since it allows you 8x8 512 frames. 💡💡💡 I believe the output quality is beyond anything currently available, and I'll be looking into packaging the whole thing into a web app so people can use it. Many of the children of Daraya have never seen a space like this. They were born into war, into the barren and blown out landscape that the Assad regime & its Russian backers turned the Damascus suburb Daraya and huge swaths of Syria into. For years this area was under siege, its population starved, bombed, and forcibly displaced. The kids were timid at first, the soft flooring, the different toys and activities all something of a novelty, such a contrast to their world outside. They were so polite, repeatedly asking “Can I play with this? Is this all for us?” This space will have playtime, a reading corner, all sorts of fun activities and also many related to the children’s mental health. We will conduct group and one on one sessions for those who need it. One of the jarring things I heard was that in this area alone some 15,000 men were disappeared by the regime. We will also be conducting activities and mental health sessions for the mothers. Women are carrying the burden of both mother and father. Children constantly ask “where is Daddy?” Mothers used to say “Daddy is with the regime”. But they can’t say that anymore, the kids are responding “the regime is gone, why isn’t Daddy home”. Mothers don’t know how to explain that Daddy disappeared, that he’s either in a yet to be discovered mass grave or one of the corpses that was dug up, that he was just a number for the Assad regime. The traumas across this country are deep, raw wounds. In Daraya, we are also in the process of setting up a mobile primary care medical van. This is just the start of our work in Syria. We travelled to other areas pinpointing where we need to expand to, what sort of programs are needed. There are so many kids who never got the medical treatment they need to physically recover from their war injuries or whose parents can’t afford the cost. There’s a lot of work to be done in the mental health and access to education space, needs ranging from hygiene to nutrition. I feel blessed to have come across this land and it would be selfish of me not to let others experience. This will be my life’s legacy work.

🇨🇳 Chongqing in the day without the lights honestly looks a lot different It's more gray and dare I say a lot of the buildings look quite derelict, kinda like when I visited Mongkok in Hong Kong A lot of spots need some heavy maintenance, the stairs in this square have broken tiles, the main bridge of this square that's I think at the 22nd floor and full of tourists all day has its cables and bolts rusting away, I'm not a structural engineer but looks dodgy to me I do think the lights at night are cool and impressive though but it'd be even more impressive if Chongqing would also be beautiful in the day without them One relatedd thing I noticed that many Chinese cities and stations and airports do not have a lot of trees or plants, and it makes everything look kinda cold and functional. Like compare Singapore's Changi Airport with any Chinese airport or train station, it has much more aesthetic I do know that Singapore is respected here a lot, as it is in the West, and I think in many things China can model itself after Singapore. Singapore is a strict rule based society which it needs, and China needs too, or it'd turn into chaos. And Singapore isn't perfect, but it's quite pretty and comfortable to look at aesthetic wise with plants everywhere and even on top of buildings and inside their architecture But then again maybe we're just at the start. Start with some fancy lights, and then start cleaning up the city and doing more maintenance I feel China is great at rapidly building new stuff out of the ground but then I don't see them maintaining it so well. In Chongqing particularly, I see so many things rusting or chipped and broken and it shouldn't be like that I think Chengdu felt much better maintained, I wonder why? Another thing is I see is that you don't see this stuff on YouTube Shorts or TikTok because it's short videos and then the fancy lights get easy views (like my video below of course too!) because you don't need to show many of the details

Yesterday, I had the honor of documenting my good friend Chris Hall in Rolling Fork, Mississippi doing what he does best helping communities all across the U.S. after disaster strikes. Over 75 pizzas from Domino’s, 600 slices to be exact, 100 meals from Waffle House, and so much more were handed out to those in need after the most significant ice storm to ever hit the region left thousands without power for days. What made this story even more special is the personal connection myself, and Chris both have to Rolling Fork after spending weeks here following the 2023 tornado. For me, being back brought mixed emotions. Grateful to help but heartbroken to see a community I grew so close to struck by hardship once again. Please show Chris some love in the comments for his outstanding work helping communities like RF get back on their feet. I know this is a long video, but Rolling Fork needs their voices heard. I spoke with multiple residents who feel they were forgotten as attention and resources were directed toward Oxford and elsewhere, and I stand behind them. Aside from the hard working linemen in town, I saw nobody helping except the locals. Lastly, Rolling Fork, as I said three years ago, you will always be in my heart. If you ever need anything, we are here for you ❤️
