Bab el-Mandeb on fire. As I predicted two days ago, the Bab el-Mandeb Strait is where the escalation will be triggered. It didn’t take long. The Houthis struck two Saudi oil tankers and it wasn’t merely a warning shot to the rudder; they simply set one of the ships on fire. This has re-ignited Yemen’s civil war. Saudi Arabia and the Emirates have reconciled and are both reactivating their proxies to attack the Houthis, while the Saudi-backed national government has also opened fire. Within hours, ballistic missiles are expected to start flying, further escalating the conflict.

War in #Yemen | After four hours of sustained attacks, and with the assault still ongoing, the Houthis have launched dozens of missiles, one-way unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and one-way unmanned surface vessels (USVs) against targets across Yemen’s West Red Sea Coast, stretching from Bab al-Mandab, Dhubab, northward through Mocha and up to Khawkhah. Mocha appears to be at the center of the attacks, with its commercial seaport, power station, solar energy field, civilian facilities, and military positions all reportedly targeted. Local authorities reported around 20 Houthi drone attacks targeting Mocha Port alone. The director of Mocha Port said the strikes caused extensive damage to port infrastructure and housing used by port employees. According to the National Resistance المقاومة الوطنية military media, air defenses have shot down 11 Houthi drones involved in attacks on Mocha Port and other locations. Circulated videos shows the dismantling of a site that was intended to host the UAE’s annual Sheikh Zayed Heritage Festival on the island. There are also reports that Emirati-linked business activities, particularly in the fisheries sector, as well as UAE-based travel agencies operating in Socotra, are closing down. These developments follow a decision by Yemen’s Saudi-backed, internationally recognized government to halt all direct maritime commercial shipping and airline traffic from the UAE to the island. To the best of my knowledge, there are currently no UAE military forces stationed on Socotra. The only foreign military presence on the island is a Saudi military task force operating alongside local forces. These local units have historically been aligned with the Southern Transitional Council المجلس الانتقالي الجنوبي العربي, but like other southern forces across South Yemen, they are now pledging loyalty to the Saudi-backed Yemeni government.
