THE MILKY WAY IS ABOUT 100,000 LIGHT-YEARS WIDE. That means light — traveling at 299,792 kilometers per second — would need 100,000 years to cross our galaxy from one side to the other. It contains an estimated 100–400 billion stars, including our Sun, orbiting a supermassive black hole about 4 million times the mass of the Sun. The Milky Way and Andromeda are currently separated by about 2.5 million light-years. Drawn together by gravity, Andromeda approaches us at roughly 110 km/s.
