We RL'ed humanoid robots to Cristiano Ronaldo, LeBron James, and Kobe Byrant! These are neural nets running on real hardware at our GEAR lab. Most robot demos you see online speed videos up. We actually *slow them down* so you can enjoy the fluid motions. I'm excited to announce "ASAP", a "real2sim2real" model that masters extremely smooth and dynamic motions for humanoid whole body control. We pretrain the robot in simulation first, but there is a notorious "sim2real" gap: it's very difficult for hand-engineered physics equations to match real world dynamics. Our fix is simple: just deploy a pretrained policy on real hardware, collect data, and replay the motion in sim. The replay will obviously have many errors, but that gives a rich signal to compensate for the physics discrepancy. Use another neural net to learn the delta. Basically, we "patch up" a traditional physics engine, so that the robot can experience almost the real world at scale in GPUs. The future is hybrid simulation: combine the power of classical sim engines refined over decades and the uncanny ability of modern NNs to capture a messy world.

A robotic ballet! 🩰 Coordinating multiple robot arms on a busy factory floor is notoriously complex. Each arm needs to move without colliding with its neighbors or the surrounding equipment, and today that planning is still mostly done by hand, a process that takes specialists hundreds of hours. Researchers at UCL, Google DeepMind, and Intrinsic have introduced RoboBallet, a new AI system that tackles this challenge head-on. Using a combination of graph neural networks and reinforcement learning, RoboBallet learns how to coordinate many robots in real time, generating smooth, collision-free motion plans in seconds instead of days. In tests, the system handled up to 40 tasks with eight arms working together, far beyond the limits of traditional planners. SceNeRFlow: Time-Consistent Reconstruction of General Dynamic Scenes abs: paper page: Existing methods for the 4D reconstruction of general, non-rigidly deforming objects focus on novel-view synthesis and neglect correspondences. However, time consistency enables advanced downstream tasks like 3D editing, motion analysis, or virtual-asset creation. We propose SceNeRFlow to reconstruct a general, non-rigid scene in a time-consistent manner. Our dynamic-NeRF method takes multi-view RGB videos and background images from static cameras with known camera parameters as input. It then reconstructs the deformations of an estimated canonical model of the geometry and appearance in an online fashion. Since this canonical model is time-invariant, we obtain correspondences even for long-term, long-range motions. We employ neural scene representations to parametrize the components of our method. Like prior dynamic-NeRF methods, we use a backwards deformation model. We find non-trivial adaptations of this model necessary to handle larger motions: We decompose the deformations into a strongly regularized coarse component and a weakly regularized fine component, where the coarse component also extends the deformation field into the space surrounding the object, which enables tracking over time. We show experimentally that, unlike prior work that only handles small motion, our method enables the reconstruction of studio-scale motions.

In this work we explore the role of continual adaptation in ALife simulation, where the cellular automata in our system do not rely on a fixed set of parameters, but rather learn continuously during the simulation itself. Our Petri Dish Neural Cellular Automata (PD-NCA) is a new ALife substrate that consists of a differentiable world where multiple NCA learn to self-replicate and grow via ongoing gradient descent. Every individual is constantly trying to grow, all the while learning to adapt and out-compete its neighbors. PD-NCA allows for complex, emergent behaviors like cyclic dynamics, territorial defense, and spontaneous cooperation. The video below shows the sheer variety and complexity that unfolds during several different simulations (each colour is a different NCA).

Agile Continuous Jumping in Discontinuous Terrains discuss: We focus on agile, continuous, and terrain-adaptive jumping of quadrupedal robots in discontinuous terrains such as stairs and stepping stones. Unlike single-step jumping, continuous jumping requires accurately executing highly dynamic motions over long horizons, which is challenging for existing approaches. To accomplish this task, we design a hierarchical learning and control framework, which consists of a learned heightmap predictor for robust terrain perception, a reinforcement-learning-based centroidal-level motion policy for versatile and terrain-adaptive planning, and a low-level model-based leg controller for accurate motion tracking. In addition, we minimize the sim-to-real gap by accurately modeling the hardware characteristics. Our framework enables a Unitree Go1 robot to perform agile and continuous jumps on human-sized stairs and sparse stepping stones, for the first time to the best of our knowledge. In particular, the robot can cross two stair steps in each jump and completes a 3.5m long, 2.8m high, 14-step staircase in 4.5 seconds. Moreover, the same policy outperforms baselines in various other parkour tasks, such as jumping over single horizontal or vertical discontinuities.
